Merewether Beach is one of Newcastle’s most iconic stretches of coastline, and one of only a handful of beaches in Australia recognised as a National Surfing Reserve. Whether you’re there to watch the surfers, splash in the shallows or just take in the view, it’s a beach that rewards a slow visit.

A National Surfing Reserve
Merewether was officially recognised as a National Surfing Reserve in 2009, part of a two kilometre stretch that runs from Dixon Park in the north to Burwood Beach in the south. It’s genuinely earned the title. This is the training ground of four-time world surfing champion Mark Richards, and the fabled right-handers that peel off the rocks here have drawn competitors and spectators for decades.
The reserve also holds deep cultural significance for the Awabakal people, with ochre from the area historically used for colouring seasonal grasses, and the beach continuing to host Surfest’s Indigenous Classic, one of Australia’s most prestigious Indigenous surfing events.
Home of Surfest
Merewether Beach has been the home of Surfest, Australia’s largest surfing festival, since 2007. Held over several weeks in February and March each year, it brings world-class surfing, live entertainment and a genuine festival atmosphere to the beach, with events also spilling over to Newcastle Beach and other spots around the region. If you’re visiting during Surfest season, expect crowds, a lively café strip and some of the best free spectator surfing you’ll see all year. Beyond the Surf
Merewether isn’t just for surfers. The grassy reserve above the beach is a popular spot for dog walking and picnics, and the promenade is lined with cafes with genuinely great ocean views. At the southern end, Merewether Ocean Baths, the largest ocean baths complex in the Southern Hemisphere, gives families a calmer swimming option when the surf isn’t right for little ones.
Merewether Beach also marks the southern end of the Bathers Way, Newcastle’s popular coastal walking track that runs all the way from Nobbys Beach. If you’ve walked (or scootered) the whole route, this is where it finishes, and it’s a fitting spot to reward the kids with an ice cream or a swim.
Swimming & Safety
Merewether Beach is patrolled seasonally, closing over the winter months and reopening with lifeguards each year in late September. Always swim between the flags when they’re up, and check conditions before you go, the surf here can be strong given its exposure and reputation as a serious break. If the ocean’s too rough for the kids, the ocean baths next door are the safer bet.
Getting There & Parking
Merewether Beach sits along Henderson Parade, an easy drive from the Newcastle CBD. Free parking is available in car parks and on surrounding streets, but it fills up fast during summer, school holidays and Surfest season, so arrive early or be prepared to walk a little further. You can park along Ridge Street and then travel through the the Merewether underpass. This is a pedestrian walkway underneath Scenic Drive connecting Ridge Street to Henderson Parade transformed into a vibrant underwater-themed public art by local artist Trevor Dickinson.
