Are you new in town, a new parent or just looking for some new friends for your child or yourself? Join a local playgroup in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie or the Hunter. Playgroup is an informal session where mums, dads, grandparents, caregivers, children and babies meet up in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Here’s a list of Newcastle playgroups sorted by suburb as well as some special interest playgroups. Many are affiliated with Playgroup NSW and operate during school terms. Be sure to contact the playgroup beforehand to confirm date, time and vacancies. Due to COVID-19, some playgroups have closed or temporarily suspended operation.

We begin with about 30 minutes of outside playtime to burn off some energy. Then we go inside for the music session. Children and parents sing along and do the actions to a range of different recorded music. The songs are catchy as well as designed to teach some basic skills and co-ordination, as well as a simple ideas like counting. We usually include one or two songs about God’s love for all of us. Half an hour of music is followed by home-made morning tea for children and adults, so parents get a chance to catch up and chill out and kids can enjoy a bit more play-time before going home. This is an Intergenerational Playgroup. All parents and carers of children 0-6 are welcome. Parents and children will share activities with a select group of residents each week. Attending playgroup has many benefits for a child’s physical, social, emotional, language and cognitive development. It also offers a wonderful opportunity for parents to make new friends, learn from one another and develop a supportive local network. They meet in the Ministry Centre which is next to the church. It is a great time for parents to get together and encourage each other in the joys and challenges of parenting. The morning is organised and activities can include story-time, singing, games, puzzles, craft, painting, play-dough and outdoor play in a safe, enclosed area.
