Looking for a new sport for your kids to try? When it comes to kids sport activities, we are spoilt for choice in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie & Hunter region. There are so many kids sports training programs, skills development and competitions for boys and girls from ages 5 to 17. No matter if they’re interested in playing soccer, netball, rugby league, AFL or cricket or something more, there’s a sport ideal for them.
In this new Newy with Kids Sports guide, we’ve collected information about the many kids sports programs operating in our region along with details about sports classes and introduction programs for kids.

Here’s also details of the NSW Active Kids Voucher which provides two $100 vouchers for school aged kids participating in sports with a registered Active Kids provider. It’s available to all primary and secondary school children each calendar year.

AFL Auskick introduces kids to Australian Rules Football (AFL). Auskick is inclusive for everyone aged 5-12 at any ability to play.

Little Athletics is a Australian modified athletics program for children from 5 to 15 years. It’s based upon the sport of athletics (track and field).
Little Athletics generally runs from October through to late March.

Hunter Badminton provides badminton instruction to kids (6 – 16) who are new to the sport in their Junior Activity sessions. The sessions provide basic skill knowledge, fundamentals and a fun learning environment. There’s also Junior Training sessions which provide more development opportunities for kids who already know how to play.
Newcastle Baseball Association organises junior baseball in the region. T-Ball (Under 8s) and Zooka (Under 10s) programs are the junior entry sporting program in Newcastle, giving young athletes the opportunity to learn and explore baseball in a non-competitive atmosphere.
Baseball in Newcastle runs from early April through to September.

Basketballl in Newcastle & Hunter region is governed by Newcastle Basketball and runs sport for kids aged 8s to Under 17s.
For younger kids, the Mini Hoops Program provides essential physical activity for children aged 3 to 5 years at at Newcastle Basketball Stadium.

If your kids want to learn boxing, PCYC Lake Macquarie offers boxing for fitness and competitive amateur boxing.
In Newcastle, the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association provides information about kids cricket.
Junior Blasters (5 – 7) and Master Blasters (7 – 10) programs are introductory program to cricket. Junior Blasters teaches kids the basic skills of cricket with participants building their skills through fun, game based activities. After they have mastered the basics, they will be ready for modified games of cricket.

Get involved in junior racing with the Hunter District Cycling Club. The club provides opportunities for young riders to compete in different categories from Under 9s through to Under 19s in road and track races.
Newcastle PCYC | Learn the sport of fencing. It’s offered by Newcastle PCYC for children aged 9 up, teenagers and adults. If you haven’t fenced before you will need to complete the 5 week starter course before you can participate in the fencing classes.
Newcastle Hockey Association is the governing body for field hockey in the Newcastle region. It offers the MINKEY program. Previously known as Hookin2Hockey, MINKEY is a program designed to introduce kids to to hockey. Suitable for children under the age of 6 and/or those older children who are yet to have any exposure to the sport, MINKEY gives young girls and boys the opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey, develop fundamental motor skills and make friends.
Field hockey competition includes the Under 8s Joeys and Under 11 Kangas.

Maitland Hockey organises field hockey in the Maitland area and offers competitions for Under 6s to Under 13s. There’s also occasional free Come and Try Days.
Nelson Bay Hockey Club organises field hockey in the Nelson Bay area and offers competitions for Under 6s to Under 15s. There’s also occasional free Come and Try Days.
Futsal is a modified indoor soccer game without the use of walls.
Northern NSW Futsal offers games to junior boys and girls starting from U6s.
Summer competition runs from September to mid-February while the Winter competition runs from March to August.

Advance Academy of Gymnastics and Acrobatics offers competitive gymastics. In addition, they offer recreational classes where children from 18 months to 18 yrs can enjoy gymnastics.
Blackert Gymnastics Academy offers competitive squad gymnastics for kids aged 5+. For younger kids, they offer Tiny Tots (18 – 36 months), Super Tots (2.5 – 4 yrs), Gymfun for kids (4 – 5 yrs) and Gym Fun and Gym Skills for K-2+.
Hunter Sports Centre offers beginner gymnastic programs for kids aged 4+ and trampoline based programs (7+). They also offer Kindergym (18 months to 5yrs) and Parent & Child Junior Gym (4 – 5 yrs)
Kurri Kurri Gymnastics Club offers recreational and competitive gymnastics as well as Kids on the Move for younger kids (0 to 5).
PCYC Lake Macquarie offers KinderGym for kids (18 months to 5 years), recreational gymnastics and competitive gymnastics.
PCYC Newcastle offers KinderGym for kids (18 months to 5 years), recreational gymnastics and competitive gymnastics.
YWCA Newcastle offers KinderGym for kids (1 to 5 years).
Learn to play ice hockey at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium in Warners Bay. The Ice Hockey School is available to all ages, male and female. At the end of each ten week section (based around school terms) players will be appraised on the skills they have acquired. Players deemed to have “passed” Learn to Play will be invited to join a team in the local competition. Teams include 11 & under, 13 & under and 15 & under.
No matter if your kids want to try judo, karate, jiu jitsu, there’s a range of classes around Newcastle and the Hunter.
A popular sport for local girls, there are netball clubs operating all over the region.
Charlestown Netball Association runs netball competitions around the Charlestown area and runs programs for girls aged 5+. Introductory program is NetSetGo.

Newcastle Hunter Junior Oztag runs an after school competition played at Smith Park in Broadmeadow. Teams range from Under 8s to Under 16s. There’s Mixed, Girls and Boys divisions.

In the Maitland and Hunter Valley region, the Maitland & District Junior Rugby League Association organises competition for kids of various age groups.
The Hunter Junior Rugby Union governs rugby union for kids and youth in the region for age groups ranging from Under 7s to Under 18s
Belmont 16ft Sailing Club offers introductory sailing courses for children aged 6 – 17 years with a maximum of 20 participants in a group and kids do not need any previous experience. Their instructors and assistant instructors will target the program to the abilities, ages, and levels of confidence within the group of children.
Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club – The Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club offers the nationally accredited “Tackers” junior sailing program for kids by Australian Sailing, the peak body for the sport in Australia. The Tackers program offers children, in a general age range of 7-12 years, sequential skill & knowledge development. The boats used are specifically designed to suit children and help them learn quickly & confidently.

Surf Life Saving
Want to get your kids involved in Nippers? Find out more and The Hunter Surf Life Saving Club through your local surf club.
Nippers is Surf Life Saving Australia’s (SLSA’s) junior activities program that introduces children aged 5 to 13 to surf lifesaving.
If your kids want to play water polo, check out the Newcastle Water Polo website. The competition includes Mixed Under 14s and Junior Boys and Girls U17s.
