What’s open and closed over the Christmas Day and New Years break in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland? Here’s a handy holiday services guide to show you what’s open and shut over the holidays.

City of Newcastle Christmas Operating Hours

Beaches: City of Newcastle lifeguards are now working a seven-day summer roster. Nobbys, Bar, Merewether, Dixon Park, Newcastle and Stockton beaches are patrolled, along with Newcastle and Merewether Ocean Baths, until the season end scheduled for April 25 2022. Find out more about beach patrols.

Pools: Council manages Beresfield Pool – closed Christmas Day. For more information on other inland pools visit Lane4 Aquatics. Lambton Pool, Mayfield Pool, Stockton Pool and Wallsend Pool will be closed on Christmas Day.

Newcastle Museum:  – Open Tuesday to Sunday 10am – 5pm and every day during the NSW school holidays. Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Monday 27 December 2021 and New Year’s Day. 

Newcastle Art Gallery: Open Tuesday to Sunday 10 am – 5 pm and every day during the school holidays. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Open on New Year’s Day.

Libraries: All branches will be closed from noon on Friday 24 December and resuming normal opening hours from Tuesday 4 January 2022.  Customer return chutes will be open at all branches, and customers can renew borrowed items online via the Library website or mobile app.

Blackbutt Reserve: Picnic facilities open from 7 am to 7 pm daily. Wildlife exhibits and the kiosk will be closed on Christmas Day.

Fort Scratchley: Closed Friday 24 December, Saturday 25 December, Sunday 26 December 2021 and Saturday 1 January 2022. Open as normal 10 am – 4 pm all other days. The Fort is closed on Tuesdays.

Civic Theatre: Open for scheduled performances only.

Visitor Information Centre: Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Sunday 27 December 2020 and New Year’s Day. 

Council Offices: Closed from midday Friday 24 December 2021, reopening on 4 January 2022.

Customer Contact Centre (phone enquiries) – All customer service operations will be closed for the festive period from midday on Friday 24 December 2021, reopening on 4 January 2022. 

Waste collection: All kerbside bin collection services will take place as usual on public holidays during 2021/22.

Lake Macquarie City Council Christmas Operating Hours

Beaches: Normal patrols at Blacksmiths, Catherine Hill Bay, Caves Beach and Redhead. Normal patrols are 9am-5pm. Patrol times may extend during busy or dangerous conditions.

Pools: Lake Mac Swim Centres Charlestown, Speers Point, Swansea, West Wallsend will close at noon on Friday 24 December 2021 and will be closed Christmas Day. 26 December – normal operating hours resume. Morriset and Toronto centres set and advertise their own hours.

Lake Mac Libraries: Open until noon on Friday 24 December. Closed on Christmas Day to Tuesday 29 December 2021. On Thursday 30 December – Charlestown and Toronto open 9am-1pm. All other libraries closed. On Friday 31 December – Charlestown and Toronto open 9am-1pm. All other libraries closed. From Saturday 1 January to Monday 3 January, all libraries are closed. Normal hours resume on Tuesday 4 January 2022.

Museum of Art and Culture: Open until noon on Friday 24 December. Closed from Christmas Day to Tuesday 28 December 2021. Open on Wednesday 29 December and Thursday 30 December. Open on NYE from 9am to noon. Closed on Saturday 1 January 2022. Normal hours resume on Saturday 4 January 2022.

Waste collection: There are no changes to waste, recycling or green waste collections. Bins will be serviced as usual. Awaba Waste Management Facility closed Christmas Day

Council offices: Open until noon Friday 24 December 2021. Re-open 9am on Tuesday 4 January 2022.

Maitland City Council Christmas Operating Hours

Aquatic Centres: Closes 4pm Friday 24 December 2021. Closed Christmas Day. Open 10am to 6pm on Boxing Day. Open 6am to 4pm on New Year’s Eve. Open 10am to 6pm New Year’s Day. On 2 January 2022, open 6am to 6pm and on 3 January, open from 8am to 6pm. Hours return to normal after 3 January 2022

Administration building: Closes 1.00pm Friday 24 December 2021 and reopens Tuesday 4 January 2022.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery: Closes 3.00pm Thursday 24 December 2021 and reopens Wednesday 29 December 2021 as normal. Closed New Year’s Day. Please note: Café Seraphine will be closed between Christmas and New Year. Please note: Café Seraphine will be closed between Christmas and New Year.

Libraries: All Maitland Libraries close 1.00pm Friday 24 December 2021 and reopen 9.00am Tuesday 4 January 2022.

Visitor Information Centre: Closes 3pm Friday 24 December 2021 and will reopen with normal business days and hours from 10am Sunday 26 December 2021.

Maitland Gaol: Closes 4pm Friday 24 December 2021 and will reopen with normal business hours from Monday 27 December 2020. Closed New Year’s Day.

Waste Collection: Waste collection services will be unaffected during the holiday period.

Mt Vincent Waste Disposal Depot: Closed Christmas Day only.

Cessnock City Council Christmas Operating Hours

Administration: Closed from 12pm Friday 24 December 2021 until 9am Tuesday 4 January 2022.

Libraries: Closed from 12pm Friday 24 December 2021 until 9am Tuesday 4 January 2022.

Cessnock Community Performing Arts Centre: Closed from 12pm Friday 24 December 2021 until 9am Monday 10 January 2022. Bookings still available online.

Hunter Valley Visitors Centre: Closed Christmas Day only, normal operating hours apply 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 4pm on Sundays.

Branxton & Cessnock Pool: Cessnock and Branxton Pools will close at Midday on Christmas Eve and reopen at 7am on Boxing Day.  They will also close at midday on New Year’s eve and reopen at 7am on New Year’s day.  Public holiday hours are 7am to 5.30pm. Non public holiday hours are 6am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 5.30pm Saturday and Sunday. Operating hours are subject to weather conditions.

Kurri Kurri Aquatic Centre: Christmas Eve open 7am to 12 noon, Closed on Christmas Day. Boxing Day open 10am to 4pm. New Year’s Eve open 7am to 12noon. New Year’s Day open 10am to 4pm. Normal operating hours on other days.

Garbage: These services will be as normal during the Christmas/New Year period.

Cessnock Waste and Re-Use Centre: Closed Christmas day only, open as normal thereafter.

Port Stephens Council Christmas Operating Hours – 2021 Hours TBA

Administration: Administration Building will be closed from 3pm Thursday 24 December 2020 to 8:30am Monday 4 January 2021.

Raymond Terrace & Tomaree Libraries: Open: Thursday 24 December 2020 9am to 2pm. Closed: 25 December to 3 January 2021 inclusive. Re-open: Monday 4 January 2021 from 9am.

Tilligerry Library: Closed: 12 midday Friday 18 December 2020. Re-open: 10am Monday 18 January.

Lakeside Leisure Centre: Closed Christmas Day.

Charlestown Square: Open 8am- 5.30pm Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day,  open Boxing Day from 8am to 6pm. Closed New Year’s Day.

Westfield Kotara: Open 8am – 5:30pm Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day. Selected outlets open Boxing Day from 10am to 4pm. Closed New Year’s Day.

Stockland Green Hills: Open 8am – 5:30pm Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day. Open Boxing Day from 9am to 6pm. Open New Year’s Day from 10am to 4pm.

Coles and Woolworths stores will be closed on Christmas Day but reopening on Boxing Day.

Liquor stores will be closed on Christmas Day but will be open on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

 

Cinemas

Event Cinemas Kotara and Glendale will be closed on Christmas Day but will reopen on Boxing Day for movie sessions.

Hoyts Charlestown will also be open for reduced session times on Christmas Day, generally starting midafternoon.

Reading Cinemas Charlestown and Maitland will be open as normal over the holiday period but closed on Christmas Day.

 

Chemists
