What’s open and closed over the Christmas Day and New Years break in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland? Here’s a handy holiday services guide to show you what’s open and shut over the holidays.

City of Newcastle Christmas Operating Hours

Beaches: All beaches patrolled from 7am – 5:30pm. Beaches are patrolled on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays by the Surf Lifesaving Clubs

Pools: Council manages Beresfield Pool – closed Christmas Day. For more information on other inland pools visit Lane4 Aquatics. Lambton Pool, Mayfield Pool, Stockton Pool and Wallsend Pool will be closed on Christmas Day.

Newcastle Museum:  Open Tuesday to Sunday 10am – 5pm and every day during the school holidays. Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Newcastle Art Gallery: Open Tuesday to Sunday 10am – 5pm and every day during the school holidays. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve. Open on New Year’s Day.

Libraries: Newcastle Region Library branches will be closed during the Christmas and New Year period from Monday 23 December with normal service resuming on Thursday 2 January.

Blackbutt Reserve: Open as normal.  Picnic facilities open 7am to 7pm. Wildlife exhibits and kiosk closed Christmas Day.

Fort Scratchley: Closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Open as normal 10am-4pm all other days. Fort closed on Tuesdays.

Civic Theatre box office: Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Hunter Street Mall Parking Station:  Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Open late until 10.30pm for New Year’s Eve celebrations at Queens Wharf precinct. Open as normal after that time.

Beresfield Golf Course: Closed Christmas Day and opening at 7am on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Normal hours all other days.

Visitor Information Centre: Closed Christmas Day.

Council Offices: Closed from 12noon Friday 20 December. Normal hours resume 8:30am on Thursday 2 January.

Waste collection: No collections on Christmas Day. All bin collections falling on Wednesday 25 December to Friday 27 December will take place one day later than usual. Services will resume as usual from Monday 30 December 2019. Summerhill Waste Management Centre: Closed Christmas Day. Boxing Day and New Year’s Day: 9am-3pm, last vehicle in by 2:45pm

Lake Macquarie City Council Christmas Operating Hours

Beaches: Normal patrols. Patrol times are Monday to Sunday, 8.30am to 5pm. Patrol times may extend during busy or dangerous conditions.

Pools: Lake Mac Swim Centres are closed from 5pm Monday 24 December 2019 and will be closed Christmas Day.

Museum of Art and Culture: Open until 2pm on Tuesday 24 December. Closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Open Friday 27 December to Sunday 29 December. Closed from Monday 30 December. Open on Tuesday 31 December. Closed on New Year’s Day. Normal hours resume on Thursday 2 January.

Libraries: Tuesday 24 December – Open until noon. Closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Friday 27 and Saturday 28 December -Charlestown, Swansea and Toronto Libraries open 9am-1pm. All other libraries closed. Monday 30 December – All libraries 9am-5pm except Windale and Wangi Wangi libraries. Windale and Wangi Wangi libraries open 10am-1pm and 2-5pm. Tuesday 31 December – All libraries except Windale and Wangi Wangi libraries open until noon. Wednesday 1 January – Closed. Thursday 2 January – Normal operating hours resume for libraries

Waste collection: There are no waste, recycling and green waste collections on Christmas Day, and so all waste will be collected a day later.

Council offices: Open until noon, Tuesday 24 December 2019. Re-open Thursday 2 January 2020.

Maitland City Council Christmas Operating Hours

Pools: Closes 4pm Tuesday 24 December 2019. Closed Christmas Day. Open 11am to 7pm Boxing Day. Closed 4pm New Year’s Eve. Open 11am to 7pm New Year’s Day.

Administration building: Closes at 1pm Friday 22 December 2017 and will re-open Tuesday 2 January 2018.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery: Closes at 3pm on Sunday 22 December and will re-open 10am Friday 27 December. Closed New Year’s Day.

Libraries: Closes Saturday 21 December 2019 (East Maitland and Maitland 2pm, Rutherford and Thornton 1pm) and re-open Thursday 2 January 2019.

Visitor Information Centre: Closes 3pm Christmas Eve, reopens normal business hours from Boxing Day.

Maitland Gaol: Closes at 4pm Sunday 24 December 2017. Open for tours every day between Christmas and New Year from 9am to 4pm, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Waste Collection: Bins will be collected on Tuesday 24 December as normal but there will be no waste collection service on Christmas Day. Christmas Day waste collection areas will be serviced on Thursday 26 December.  All other areas will be serviced one day later than normal.  The waste collection service will return to normal from Tuesday 31 December.

Mt Vincent Waste Disposal Depot: Closed Christmas Day only.

Council offices: Closes at 4:30pm Friday 20 December 2018 and will re-open Thursday 2 January 2020.

Cessnock City Council Christmas Operating Hours

Administration: Closed from midday Christmas Eve until January 2, 2020.

Libraries: Closed from 12.00pm, Friday 20 December 2019 until 9am until Thursday 2 January 2020.

Cessnock Community Performing Arts Centre: Closed from 12.00pm, Friday 20 December 2019 until 9am on Monday 6 January 2020. Bookings still available on-line.

Pools: Pools will close at 12pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.  Closed Christmas Day only. On all other Public Holidays, pools will be open from 7am to 6pm.

Kurri Kurri Aquatic Centre: Christmas Eve open 5.30am to 12 noon, Closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day open 10am to 4pm, New Year’s Eve open 5.30am to 12 noon New Year’s Day open 10am to 4pm.

Garbage: No collections Christmas Day. All other collections will be the day after usual pick-up.  Normal collection service will resume for the week beginning Monday 30 December 2020.

Cessnock Waste and Re-Use Centre: Closed Christmas Day only. Greta Transfer Station: Closed Christmas Day.

Port Stephens Council Christmas Operating Hours

Administration: Closed from Christmas Eve reopening on Thursday January 2.

Raymond Terrace & Tomaree Libraries: Closed from Tuesday 24 December 2019 reopening 9am Thursday 2 January 2020.

Tilligerry Library: Closed from 12pm on Friday 20 December 2019 reopening 10am Monday 13 January 2020.

Lakeside Leisure Centre, Raymond Terrace. Open Christmas Eve from 6am to 2pm. Closed Christmas Day. Open Boxing Day from 8.30am to 6pm. Open New Years Eve from  5:30am to 6pm and on New Year’s Day from 8:30am to 6pm.

Tomaree Aquatic Centre, Salamander Bay. Open Christmas Eve from 5:30am to 6pm. Closed Christmas Day. Open Boxing Day from 8.30am to 6pm. Open New Years Eve from  5:30am to 6pm and on New Year’s Day from 8:30am to 6pm.

Tilligerry Aquatic Centre, Salamander Bay. Open Christmas Eve from 9am to 4pm. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Open New Years Eve from 9am to 4pm and on New Year’s Day from 9am to 4pm.

Garbage: Garbage and recycling bins will be collected as per normal, even on public holidays. Collection services may commence at an earlier hour due to reduced operation times at waste facilities on these days.

Shopping Centres

Charlestown Square: Open 8am- 5.30pm Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day,  selected outlets open Boxing Day from 8am to 9pm. Closed New Year’s Day.

Westfield Kotara: Open 9am – 5pm Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day. Selected outlets open Boxing Day from 8am to 9pm. Closed New Year’s Day.

Stockland Green Hills: Open 9am – 5.30pm Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day. Selected outlets open Boxing Day from 9am to 9pm. Open New Year’s Day from 10am to 4pm.

Coles and Woolworths stores will be closed on Christmas Day but reopening on Boxing Day.

Liquor stores will be closed on Christmas Day but will be open on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

 

Cinemas

Event Cinemas Kotara will be open as normal over the holiday period and open on Christmas Day for late afternoon and evening sessions.

Hoyts Charlestown will also be open or reduced session times on Christmas Day, generally starting midafternoon.

Reading Cinemas Charlestown will be open as normal over the holiday period but closed on Christmas Day.

 

Chemists
