What’s open and closed over the Christmas Day and New Years break in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland? Here’s a handy holiday services guide to show you what’s open and shut over the holidays.

City of Newcastle Christmas Operating Hours

Beaches: City of Newcastle lifeguards are now working a seven-day summer roster. Nobbys, Bar, Merewether, Dixon Park, Newcastle and Stockton beaches are patrolled, along with Newcastle and Merewether Ocean Baths, until the season end scheduled for April 2021. Find out more about beach patrols.

Pools: Council manages Beresfield Pool – closed Christmas Day. For more information on other inland pools visit Lane4 Aquatics. Lambton Pool, Mayfield Pool, Stockton Pool and Wallsend Pool will be closed on Christmas Day.

Newcastle Museum:  – Open Tuesday to Sunday 10am – 5pm and every day during the NSW school holidays. Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Sunday 27 December 2020 and New Year’s Day. 

Newcastle Art Gallery: Open Tuesday to Sunday 10 am – 5 pm and every day during the school holidays. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Open on New Year’s Day.

Libraries: Branches will close from noon on Christmas Eve and reopen on Monday 4 January 2021. Customer return chutes will be open at all branches, and customers can renew borrowed items online via the Library website or mobile app.

Blackbutt Reserve: Picnic facilities open from 7 am to 7 pm daily. Wildlife exhibits and the kiosk will be closed on Christmas Day.

Fort Scratchley: Closed Thursday 24 December, Friday 25 December, Saturday 26 December 2020 and Friday 1 January 2021. Open as normal 10 am – 4 pm all other days. The Fort is closed on Tuesdays.

Civic Theatre: Open for scheduled performances only.

Beresfield Golf Course: Closing at 5 pm on Thursday 24 December and New Year’s Eve. Closed Christmas Day and opening at 7 am Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Normal hours all other days. 

Visitor Information Centre: Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Sunday 27 December 2020 and New Year’s Day. 

Council Offices: Closed from midday Thursday 24 December 2020, reopening on 4 January 2021.

Customer Contact Centre (phone enquiries) – All customer service operations will be closed for the festive period from midday on Thursday 24 December 2020, reopening on 4 January 2021. 

Waste collection: There will be no kerbside waste or recycling services on Christmas Day. All bin collections falling on Friday 25 December will take place one day later than usual as shown in the table below. Services will resume as usual from Monday 28 December 2020.

Lake Macquarie City Council Christmas Operating Hours

Beaches: Normal patrols at Blacksmiths, Catherine Hill Bay, Caves Beach and Redhead. Normal patrols are 9am-5pm. Patrol times may extend during busy or dangerous conditions.

Pools: Lake Mac Swim Centres will close at 4pm Thursday 24 December 2020 and will be closed Christmas Day.

Lake Mac Libraries: Open until noon on Thursday 24 December. Closed on Christmas Day to Tuesday 29 December 2020. On Wednesday 30 December – Charlestown and Toronto open 9am-1pm. All other libraries closed. On Thursday 31 December – Charlestown and Toronto open 9am-1pm. All other libraries closed. From Friday 1 January to Sunday 3 January, all libraries are closed. Normal hours resume on Monday 4 January 2021.

Museum of Art and Culture: Open until 2pm on Thursday 24 December. Closed from Christmas Day to Tuesday 29 December 2020. Open on Wednesday 30 December and Thursday 31 December. Closed on Friday 1 January 2021. Normal hours resume on Saturday 2 January 2021.

Waste collection: There are no waste, recycling or green waste collections on Christmas Day. All waste will be collected a day later.

Council offices: Open until noon, Thursday 24 December 2020. Re-open 9am on Monday 4 January 2021.

Maitland City Council Christmas Operating Hours

Aquatic Centres: Closes 4pm Thursday 24 December 2020. Closed Christmas Day. Open 10am to 7pm on Boxing Day. Closes 4pm New Year’s Eve. Open 10am to 7pm New Year’s Day.

Administration building: Closes 1pm Thursday 24 December 2020 and will reopen Monday 4 January 2021.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery: Closes 5pm Thursday 24 December 2020. Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Reopen Sunday 27 December 2020 as normal. Closed New Year’s Day.

Please note: Café Seraphine will be closed between Christmas and New Year.

Libraries: All Maitland Libraries close 5pm Thursday 24 December 2020 and reopen 9am Monday 4 January 2021.

Visitor Information Centre: Closes 3pm Thursday 24 December 2020 and will reopen with normal business days and hours from 10am Saturday 26 December 2020.

Maitland Gaol: Closes 4pm Thursday 24 December 2020 and will reopen with normal business hours from Sunday 27 December 2020. Closed New Year’s Day.

Waste Collection: Bins will be collected on Thursday 24 December as normal. There will be no waste collection service on Friday 25 December 2020. Instead, Friday waste collection areas will be serviced on Saturday 26 December 2020. The waste collection service will return to normal from Monday 28 December 2020.​

Mt Vincent Waste Disposal Depot: Closed Christmas Day only.

Cessnock City Council Christmas Operating Hours

Administration: Closed from midday Thursday 24 December 2020 until 9am January 4, 2021

Libraries: Closed from 12.00pm on Thursday 24 December 2020. Reopens 9am on Monday 4 January 2021.

Cessnock Community Performing Arts Centre: Closed from 4:30pm, Wednesday 23 December 2020 until 9am on Monday 11 January 2021. Bookings still available on-line.

Branxton & Cessnock Pool: Pools will close at 12pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.  Closed Christmas Day only. Normal operating hours on other days.

Kurri Kurri Aquatic Centre: Christmas Eve open 5.30am to 12 noon, Closed on Christmas Day. New Year’s Eve open 5.30am to 12noon. Normal operating hours on other days.

Garbage: No collections will take place on Friday 25 December 2020 (Christmas Day). General waste, recycling and green waste scheduled for collection on Friday 25 December 2020 (Christmas Day) will be collected on the following day, Saturday 26 December 2020 (Boxing Day).

Cessnock Waste and Re-Use Centre: Closed Christmas Day only. Greta Transfer Station: Closed until further notice.

Port Stephens Council Christmas Operating Hours – 2020 Hours TBA

Administration: Administration Building will be closed from 3pm Thursday 24 December 2020 to 8:30am Monday 4 January 2021.

Raymond Terrace & Tomaree Libraries: Open: Thursday 24 December 2020 9am to 2pm. Closed: 25 December to 3 January 2021 inclusive. Re-open: Monday 4 January 2021 from 9am.

Tilligerry Library: Closed: 12 midday Friday 18 December 2020. Re-open: 10am Monday 18 January.

Lakeside Leisure Centre: Closed Christmas Day.

Tomaree Aquatic Centre: Closed Christmas Day.

Tilligerry Aquatic Centre: Closed Christmas Day.

Garbage: Waste and recycling collection services continue as normal regardless of public holidays. Kerbside collection will be on a break from Thursday 24 December to Sunday 3 January.

Shopping Centres

Charlestown Square: Open 8am- 5.30pm Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day,  open Boxing Day from 8am to 6pm. Closed New Year’s Day.

Westfield Kotara: Open 9am – 5pm Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day. Selected outlets open Boxing Day from 8am to 9pm. Closed New Year’s Day.

Stockland Green Hills: Open 8am – 6pm Christmas Eve, closed Christmas Day. Open Boxing Day from 8am to 6pm. Open New Year’s Day from 10am to 4pm.

Coles and Woolworths stores will be closed on Christmas Day but reopening on Boxing Day.

Liquor stores will be closed on Christmas Day but will be open on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

 

Cinemas

Event Cinemas Kotara and Glendale will be closed on Christmas Day but will reopen on Boxing Day for movie sessions.

Hoyts Charlestown will also be open for reduced session times on Christmas Day, generally starting midafternoon.

Reading Cinemas Charlestown and Maitland will be open as normal over the holiday period but closed on Christmas Day.

 

Chemists

To find a chemist open over the holidays near you, check out the Newy with Kids After Hours Chemist List. Most chemists will be closed on Christmas Day but will have varying hours on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Call first to confirm opening hours.
