Head to Rathmines Youth Hub to Visit the Skate Park & Pump Track

Opened in October 2024, the Rathmines Youth Hub is a skate park, pump track and multi-court on the western side of Lake Macquarie. It’s a large, impressive space with plenty of room, even when it’s busy.

Newy with Kids visited when the Youth Hub first opened to check out the upgraded space and found it pumping with kids, teens and adults.

We ran into Matt from Parreys Skatepark, who explained this is a street-scape style park built with elements like ledges, banks, quarters and rails, giving riders a more interesting layout to work with.

He also pointed out that the surface is super smooth, making it ideal for skateboards and scooters.

The Convic-constructed plaza-style skate park features a mini ramp, banks and quarters, rails and boxes, a cantilevered wave, manual pads, hubbas and stairs, all set against an electric colour palette.

Located next to the skate park is the Rathmines pump track, the second pump track in Lake Macquarie. World-renowned Velosolutions, who delivered the city’s first pump track at Redhead, constructed the 120 metre Rathmines circuit, which features multiple line options, rollers, berms and doubles.

Unlike the Redhead Pump Track which is suited to intermediate to advanced, Matt advises that the Rathmines Pump Track is for beginners to intermediate riders, and is suitable for bikes, skateboards and scooters.

For those unfamiliar with pump tracks, it’s a circuit of rollers, banked turns and jumps.

Riders build momentum by pumping their bodies up and down rather than pedalling or pushing, and the design allows for different routes around the circuit.

There’s also a multi-sport court with half-court basketball feature.

Visiting the Youth Hub? Combine it with the Newy with Kids Rathmines Scavenger Hunt, which takes families along the lakeside foreshore past the Catalina War Memorial and finishes near the Youth Hub. It’s a great way to explore the area’s wartime history before letting the kids loose on the skate park and pump track. Download the Rathmines Scavenger Hunt.
