Whether you’re looking at getting in shape, doing some fun runs with your kids, supporting a cause or enrolling your kids in a specific kids run, here are some family-friendly walks and runs in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter.
Park Run (every week)
Parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in. Parkrun takes place every Saturday at 8am. You just need to register on the website before your first run to get a barcode for registration and timing.
There are currently 11 Parkruns in the region.

5K Foam Fest (Saturday 1 February 2020) – POSTPONED UNTIL 2021 due to bushfire conditions
The 5K Foam Fest is a one of kind obstacle course based fun run at Hope Estate. With a variety of obstacles and a ton of foam, the run is an exciting challenge for experienced and beginner runners alike. 5k Foam Fest has 22 of some of the best and most exciting obstacles in the world including the world’s largest inflatable waterslide, slip and slides, and mucky mud pits!

The Coastal Ascent (Sunday 16 February 2020)
The Coastal Ascent is a trail run starting from Dixon Park through Merewether and into Glenrock Reserve with challenging 11km and 25km routes. It also includes a family-friendly trail run of 5km that families can do together. Kids 11 and under can do the 1.6 km Kids Beach Bolt.

Newcastle Colour Frenzy (Sunday 15 March 2020)
Newcastle Colour Frenzy is on at Foreshore Park and features a Colour Toss at the beginning of the race and a series of easy obstacles. The walk / run is a family-focused event, designed for all ages with loop lap tracks of 1km to 2.5km instead of just one straight 5km run. You can choose how far you wish to walk or run! Melanoma March (Sunday 22 March 2020) – CANCELLED
Join this family friendly event at Camp Shortland. Melanoma March is in its ninth year and is Melanoma Institute Australia’s major annual fundraising campaign. Each Melanoma March brings together melanoma patients, their families and local communities to raise awareness and funds for research to reach the goal of zero deaths from melanoma. NewRun (Sunday 5 April 2020) – POSTPONED
Fort5 is a 5km run for adults and kids aged 8 – 17. It’s a 5km fast and flat course which showcases the best of Newcastle Foreshore from Nobbys to Honeysuckle.
2K4Kids (Kids Only)
For younger kids, there’s 2K4Kids, a special 2km run for kids aged 4 to 17 along Newcastle Foreshore. This race is designed to give little people some big fun. All children will receive a race number, medal, and downloadable certificate.

Spartan Port Stephens (9 & 10 May 2020) – CANCELLED
In May 2020, Spartan Obstacle Course Race will be heading to Port Stephens, with the 5k Sprint (kids aged 14+) and 10k Super. There’s also the Spartan Kids Race. There’s Spartan Juniors for 3-8 years olds and the Big Kids category for those aged 9-13. Kids will run, balance, walk, crawl and climb their way through a fun-filled obstacle course that helps them understand what it’s like to be a Spartan! The races have been specifically designed to be suitable for kids of all ages and fitness levels.

Memory Walk and Jog (31 May 2020) – CANCELLED
Join the Memory Walk and Jog on the foreshore at Lake Macquarie on Sunday 31 May 2020 for a morning of family-friendly fun, fitness and fundraising for Dementia Australia. Select either 2km, 7.5km walk or 7.5km run as your preferred distance. Choose whether you want to walk, jog or run. Whichever way you decide to move, you’ll be helping beat dementia to the finish line.

Maitland River Run (7 June 2020) – POSTPONED TO 1 NOVEMBER 2020
For a fun family walk / run, complete one lap of the Maitland River Run. Offering a picturesque 4km course in and around the Mall and River Bank of Maitland’s CBD, the event is open to kids over 5 years of age.

Rafferty’s Coastal Run (18 July 2020) – CANCELLED
Returning in 2019 is the Raffertys Kids Fun Run in conjunction with Raffertys Coastal Run. Giving kids aged 5 to 12 an event to get excited about, the Raffertys Kids Fun Run will take place around Raffertys Resort in Cams Wharf on the event day. Approximately 1km in length, all runners will receive an official race number plate and finishers medal.

Winery Running Festival (19 July 2020) – CANCELLED
Winery Wander 6km
The course runs through The Vintage Golf Resort and Spa and also Bimbadgen Winery and has spectacular views over the Hunter Valley.
Kids Marathon or 2K Run
This event can be entered either as a stand along 2km run or as part of the Kids Marathon program, where kids run 5km per weeks for 8 weeks to accumulate 40km and then complete their marathon journey.

Lake Mac Running Festival (30 August 2020) – ON HOLD
4km Kids Scamper (Kids Only)
The Lake Mac Running Festival runs on a course that follows the foreshore of Lake Macquarie starting and finishing at Warners Bay. The 4Km Kids Scamper is for kids aged 8 to 13.
Lake Macquarie 10.5km Fun Run
There’s also the 10.5km Fun Run which you can run or walk with your kids.

Variety Christmas Walk (December 2020)
The Variety Santa Fun Run runs annually in Newcastle in December. With a 5km and 10km scenic route, the event is ideal for families and fun runners alike to get active and have some Christmas fun. Each participant will receive a Santa suit to wear.
