Whether you’re looking at getting in shape, doing some fun runs with your kids, supporting a cause or enrolling your kids in a specific kids run, here are some family-friendly walks and runs in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter. Please check individual events for their COVID safety protocols.
Park Run (every week)
Parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in. Parkrun takes place every Saturday at 8am. You just need to register on the website before your first run to get a barcode for registration and timing. Parkrun has reopened again but check with your local Parkrun for confirmation.
There are currently 11 Parkruns in the region.

The Coastal Ascent (Sunday 14 February 2021)
The Coastal Ascent is a trail run starting from Dixon Park through Merewether and into Glenrock Reserve with challenging 11km and 25km routes. It also includes a family-friendly trail run of 5km that families can do together. Kids 11 and under can do the 1.6 km Kids Beach Bolt.

NewRun (Sunday 11 April 2021)
Fort5 is a 5km run for adults and kids aged 8 – 17. It’s a 5km fast and flat course which showcases the best of Newcastle Foreshore from Nobbys to Honeysuckle.
2K4Kids (Kids Only)
For younger kids, there’s 2K4Kids, a special 2km run for kids aged 4 to 17 along Newcastle Foreshore. This race is designed to give little people some big fun. All children will receive a race number, medal, and downloadable certificate.

Spartan Port Stephens (30 April – 2 May 2021)
In April 2021, Spartan Obstacle Course Race will be heading to Port Stephens, with the 5k Sprint (kids aged 14+) and 10k Super. There’s also the Spartan Kids Race. Spartan Kids is a series of obstacle course races — ranging from 800m to 3.2km — specifically designed to get your kids (ages 4-14) outside, feeling accomplished and having fun. They’ll run, jump and crush their way through obstacles, just like the adults.

Memory Walk and Jog (11 May 2021)
Join the Memory Walk and Jog on the foreshore at Speers Point Park in Lake Macquarie on Sunday 21 May for a morning of family-friendly fun, fitness and fundraising for Dementia Australia. Select either 2km, 7.5km walk or 7.5km run as your preferred distance. Choose whether you want to walk, jog or run. Whichever way you decide to move, you’ll be helping beat dementia to the finish line.

Maitland River Run (6 June 2021)
For a fun family walk / run, complete one lap of the Maitland River Run. Offering a picturesque 4km course in and around the Mall and River Bank of Maitland’s CBD, the event is open to kids over 5 years of age.

Rafferty’s Coastal Run (3 July 2021)
Returning in 2021 is the Raffertys Kids Fun Run in conjunction with Raffertys Coastal Run. Giving kids aged 5 to 12 an event to get excited about, the Raffertys Kids Fun Run will take place around Raffertys Resort in Cams Wharf on the event day. Approximately 1km in length, all runners will receive an official race number plate and finishers medal.

Winery Running Festival (17 – 18 July 2021)
Winery Wander 6km
The course runs in and around the spectacular Hunter Valley Wine Country. This is ideal for those wanting a hit out before lunch and those building their running/walking up.
Kids Marathon or 2K Run
This event can be entered either as a stand along 2km run or as part of the Kids Marathon program, where kids run 5km per weeks for 8 weeks to accumulate 40km and then complete their marathon journey .

Lake Mac Running Festival (August 2021) – To Be Confirmed
4km Kids Scamper (Kids Only)
The Lake Mac Running Festival runs on a course that follows the foreshore of Lake Macquarie starting and finishing at Warners Bay. The 4Km Kids Scamper is for kids aged 8 to 13.
Lake Macquarie 10.5km Fun Run
There’s also the 10.5km Fun Run which you can run or walk with your kids.

Newcastle Community Run (10 October 2021)
The Newcastle Community Run is part of the Newcastle International Half Marathon. This event is on offer so that anyone can participate in this celebration of International Friendship and Co-operations. This is for anyone who can walk or run 5km. There are finisher medals for everyone.

Variety Christmas Walk (December 2021) – To Be Confirmed
The Variety Santa Fun Run runs annually in Newcastle in December. With a 5km and 10km scenic route, the event is ideal for families and fun runners alike to get active and have some Christmas fun. Each participant will receive a Santa suit to wear.
