Whether you’re looking at getting in shape, doing some fun runs with your kids or enrolling your kids in a specific kids run, here are some family friendly walks and runs in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter.

Park Run (every week)

Parkrun organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in. Parkrun takes place every Saturday at 8am. You just need to register on the website before your first run to get a barcode for registration and timing.

There are currently 11 Parkruns in the region.

NewRun (Sunday 15 April 2018)


Fort5 is a 5km run for adults and kids aged 8 – 17. It’s a 5km fast and flat course which showcases he best of Newcastle Foreshore from Nobbys to Honeysuckle.

2K4Kids (Kids Only)

For younger kids, there’s 2K4Kids, a special 2km run for kids aged 4 to 17 along Newcastle Foreshore. This race is designed to give little people some big fun. All children will receive a race number, medal, and downloadable certificate.

Mother’s Day Classic (13 May 2018)

Register for the Mother’s Day Classic in Newcastle. The event will be held at Camp Shortland, Newcastle Foreshore on Sunday 13 May. It’s a 4km walk or 6km run. The Mother’s Day Classic is a nation-wide community based event that celebrates those touched with breast cancer and raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

Memory Walk & Jog (20 May 2018)

This event held at Speers Point Park Register consists of a 2km walk, 7.5 km walk and 7.5km run and helps those impacted by dementia by joining the race against dementia.

Maitland River Run (3 June 2018)

For a fun family walk / run, complete one lap of the Maitland River Run. Offering a picturesque 4km course in and around the Mall and River Bank of Maitland’s CBD, the event is open to kids over 5 years of age.

Raffertys Coastal Run (7 July 2018)

Returning in 2018 is the Raffertys Kids Fun Run in conjunction with Raffertys Coastal Run. Giving kids aged 5 to 12 an event to get excited about, the Raffertys Kids Fun Run will take place around Raffertys Resort in Cams Wharf on the event day. Approximately 1km in length, all runners will receive an official race number plate and finishers medal.

Winery Running Festival (22 July 2018)

Winery Wander 6km

The course runs through The Vintage Golf Resort and Spa and also Bimbadgen Winery and has spectacular views over the Hunter Valley.

Kids Marathon or 2K Run

This event can be entered either as a stand along 2km run or as part of the Kids Marathon program, where kids run 5km per weeks for 8 weeks to accumulate 40km and then complete their marathon journey .

Lake Mac Running Festival (TBA)

4km Kids Scamper (Kids Only)

The Lake Mac Running Festival runs on a course that follows the foreshore of Lake Macquarie starting and finishing at Warners Bay. The 4Km Kids Scamper is for kids aged 8 to 13.

Lake Macquarie 10.5km Fun Run

There’s also the 10.5km Fun Run which you can run or walk with your kids.

Blacksmiths 2 Breakwall Coast Walk (9 September 2018)

Although this walk consists of a full 26.9km trek from Blacksmiths all the way into Nobbys Breakwall, there will also be a start from Redhead that will still cover around 15.5km of beaches and bushland, and a 5km “family walk” from Merewether that takes in Bather’s Way and King Edward park.

This is a 100% charity event, with all proceeds going to the Surf Life Saving Clubs in the Hunter Branch, with monies also being donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and also to Ronald McDonald House

Variety Christmas Walk (TBA)

Grab the family and get involved in the Variety Christmas Walk to help give a fair go to Aussie kids in need. It’s a fully accessible 5km walk so suitable for the whole family.
