Looking for a magical winter event for the whole family? Luminous is returning to Maitland this June, transforming The Levee into a glowing wonderland of light, fire, music and family-friendly entertainment.
Presented by Maitland City Council and supported by The Levee Central Maitland, Luminous will light up the city on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 June 2026, with a packed program of free and low-cost activities celebrating the winter solstice.
Families can wander through stunning light installations, enjoy live entertainment, watch fire performers, and experience the brand-new Ice Cathedral, an immersive walk-through light installation inspired by frozen landscapes and shimmering winter architecture.
One of the highlights for kids is the pop-up ice skating rink at Maitland Regional Art Gallery. Open across the festival weekend, it offers families the chance to glide into a winter wonderland right in the heart of Maitland. Skating sessions are $10 per person, inclusive of skate hire and 30 minutes skating time.
Children will also love the glowing atmosphere created by UV face painting ($10 per face), interactive roving performers from Fingers Crossed Creative, colourful circus-style performances from Creative Creatures, and spectacular fire displays throughout the precinct.
Creative families can watch fascinating live demonstrations including glass sculpting with Anna’s Glass and Raku pottery firing with Dunes Pottery, where a glowing Moon Goddess sculpture will emerge from a custom-built kiln.
As the sun goes down, the festival comes alive with live music, DJs, string performances, aerial acts and the spectacular Winterlight Revue.
On Saturday evening, visitors can enjoy thrilling performances by Ifritah Fire Dance before the festival concludes with a dazzling fireworks display over the riverbank at 8pm.
If you need to warm up with some food and wine, Luminous has you covered. Head to Bulwer Street Bites, where you’ll find a range of food stalls serving comfort food and winter treats. Adults can also enjoy a glass of local wine or bubbles at Boydells on Bourke, a cosy pop-up wine bar tucked amongst the festival lights.
Luminous runs from 5pm to 8pm on Friday 19 June and from 3pm to 8pm on Saturday 20 June. Entry is free, with a mix of free and paid activities available throughout the festival.
If you’re looking for a fun family night out during winter, Luminous is one of the Hunter’s most unique seasonal events, combining light, fire, creativity and entertainment in a spectacular riverside setting.
