Status of New Years Eve 2020 in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie & The Hunter

What’s on for New Year’s Eve? It’s a much quieter time than ever before due to restrictions for mass gatherings. However, we have found a few local family-friendly NYE events in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter to say good riddance to 2020 and celebrate New Year’s Eve / New Year’s Day with your friends and family. Here’s hoping 2021 is a much better year!

Newcastle

There are no New Year’s Eve fireworks this year in Newcastle. Instead, there will be community events on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Ring in the New Year at a series of localised events designed to safely bring the community together to celebrate the end of 2020. 

Family-friendly picnics in the park, pool parties, food trucks and food-focused market stalls will be on offer around the city on 31 December 2020 and 1 January 2021.

NYE FUN – THURSDAY 31 DECEMBER

Lambton Park

There will be Food Markets at Lambton Park on New Year’s Eve (3 pm to 8 pm), including roving entertainment and children’s activities.

Dixon Park, Merewether

There will be Food Markets at Lambton Park on New Year’s Eve (3 pm to 8 pm), including roving entertainment and children’s activities.

NEW YEAR’S DAY – FRIDAY 1 JANUARY

Newcastle Pools

There will be activations at Beresfield, Mayfield, Stockton and Wallsend pools on New Year’s Day (10 am to 4 pm), including inflatables, food trucks and roving entertainment.  

Richley Reserve, Blackbutt Reserve

Enjoy Food Markets at Richley Reserve on New Year’s Day (10 am to 4 pm), including roving entertainment, children’s activities and a ‘sensory zone’ for people with disabilities and their families.

Lake Macquarie

There are no official council celebrations for New Years Eve. Wangi RSL usually organises NYE fireworks. However, they have advised that the fireworks will not be held this year due to the current COVID-19 restrictions.

Maitland

Due to current restrictions affecting mass gatherings, Maitland New Year’s Eve Celebrations have been cancelled for 2020. Instead, there will be Make it Maitland Summer program to provide the opportunity for social connection and celebration within the community. The program includes a range of small to medium activations spread across the city throughout the summer for the community to enjoy.

Cessnock

Enjoy a family-friendly evening fireworks display at 9pm weather dependent at Hunter Valley Gardens. Head to the event area to see the night sky lit up in celebration. Dates and capacity are strictly limited due to COVID-19 restrictions, so it’s recommend to make sure you selected your preferred day correctly and purchase your tickets in advance. To purchase tickets for New Year’s Eve, you will need to purchase a Christmas Light ticket for December 31.

Port Stephens

To keep everyone safe this New Year’s Eve, Port Stephens Council has announced that there will be no annual fireworks event at the Nelson Bay Foreshore.
