Celebrate New Years Eve 2021 & Fireworks in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie & The Hunter

| |

What’s on for New Year’s Eve? Here are some local NYE events in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, and the Hunter to say good riddance to 2021 and celebrate New Year’s Eve with your friends and family. Here’s hoping 2022 is a much better year! There are events scheduled all over the region including family-friendly events organised for Newcastle Foreshore, Maitland Riverside and Nelson Bay Foreshore in Port Stephens.

If you want to just see fireworks, different fireworks displays are scheduled for 9pm in Newcastle, Wangi Wangi, Maitland, Nelson Bay and Hunter Valley Gardens. Find a great vantage point away from other people and enjoy the show.

At this stage, all of the NYE events mentioned below are proceeding despite the recent omicron surge.

Hunter New England Health has some useful tips to stay COVID-safe if you’re getting together with friends and family or attending NYE events.

  • Don’t attend any events if you have any COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Hold your event outside and avoid high risk settings – if inside open windows for ventilation.
  • If heading to a venue, check-in where required, wear a mask and make sure you’re physically distancing.
  • If you can, take a rapid antigen test before you socialise.

New Years Eve Newcastle

Newcastle will farewell 2021 with a spectacular return of New Year’s Eve celebrations to the Foreshore, with the much-loved family-friendly event to be capped off with a dazzling 9pm fireworks display.

DJ sets, roving entertainers and amusement rides will deliver a fun, festive atmosphere throughout the harbourside precinct, which will come alive with a range of activities spread along Wharf Road.

To ensure attendees can adhere to social distancing requirements, the traditional New Year’s Eve main stage concert will not take place this year.  Instead, there will be a range of activities including Indigenous art workshops, amusement rides, food vendors and market stalls on offer for those heading to the Foreshore on New Year’s Eve, allowing people to spread themselves throughout the precinct from Lynch’s Hub through to The Station.

If you’re just after a spot to see the fireworks, City of Newcastle has advised that the fireworks will be launched from Griffith Park West at Stockton. The best vantage points will be all along the Queens Wharf precinct and Foreshore Park.

For more information, visit City of Newcastle What’s On website.

While you’re down at the Foreshore, come down to The Station (former Newcastle train station) and join them as they farewell 2021 and celebrate New Year’s Eve. A family-friendly Kids Zone will open from 4pm with loads of fun in-store – including the foreshore firework display at 9pm!

For more information, visit The Station website.

Lake Macquarie

The 2021 Wangi New Year’s Eve fireworks are scheduled to go ahead this year. In past years, Wangi RSL have organised and coordinated the fireworks display with contributions by local sponsors.

This year, a new community organisation Wangi Community Fireworks Incorporated will be responsible for coordinating a fireworks display at the eastern end of Wangi Bay. The fireworks are scheduled to run at the family-friendly time of 9pm.

There are lots of free activities on offer for the whole family to enjoy in a Covid safe environment including free amusements, face painting, activities and a disco playing all the top hits from 2021.

Food, beverage and dessert stalls will be available to tantalise the taste buds of all attendees. Celebrations will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display that will light up the night sky at 9pm.

Status: At this stage, the event is scheduled to go ahead as normal. However, Maitland Events will continue to monitor and adhere to the advice regarding COVID-19.
