Awaba Mountain Bike Park: A Must-Visit for Families Who Love Riding

Nestled in the Watagans near Cooranbong, Awaba Mountain Bike Park is one of the Hunter’s premier mountain biking destinations. While it’s well known for hosting national mountain bike events, it’s also a fantastic place for families, beginners and young riders looking to build confidence on two wheels.

The park features a network of professionally built trails catering to all skill levels, from gentle beginner-friendly loops through to technical cross-country and downhill tracks for experienced riders.

The dedicated Development Trail is perfect for kids and those new to mountain biking, with wide, flowing paths and manageable features designed to help riders develop their skills.

One of the newest attractions is Pump Jump Repeat, a purpose-built skills area that combines a flowing pump track with progressive jump lines.

It’s the perfect place for riders to practice pumping through rollers, tackle tabletops and gradually build confidence on jumps, making it a favorite with kids, teens and adults alike.

Another exciting addition is the dual slalom track, which opened in recent years and lets two riders race side-by-side on parallel courses featuring berms, rollers and other fun features. It’s a great way to challenge friends and family while improving bike handling skills.
Keep an eye out for the latest addition still under construction, the TNT Trail, a timber lined fun trail for all ages.

Awaba Mountain Bike Park is a ride-at-your-own-risk facility with free entry, ample parking, toilets and picnic areas, making it easy to spend a few hours or the whole day exploring the trails. There are no food or drink outlets on site, so be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks or a picnic to keep everyone fueled for the day.

Visitors are also encouraged to take all rubbish home with them to help keep the park clean and protect the surrounding bushland.

Before you visit, it’s also worth checking the Hunter Mountain Bike Association wesbite and Facebook page for the latest track conditions and upcoming events.

The park regularly hosts club races, school competitions and major mountain bike events, and some or all of the trails may be closed to the public during these times. A quick check before leaving home can help ensure your favorite trails are open.

Whether your family is just starting out or already loves mountain biking, Awaba Mountain Bike Park offers an unforgettable outdoor adventure just over 30 minutes from Newcastle.
