The Village Playground at Headland Reserve, Catherine Hill Bay, is a beautifully designed space that opened in early 2025.

Being a neighbourhood playground, it’s not a huge playground, but it’s a lovely space to stop for a rest and to let the kids have a play if you’re visiting the area.

The playground features natural elements and climbing and balancing structures that all ages will enjoy. Kids can balance their way along the timber balancing logs and climb to the top of the slide tower one of three ways, before sliding down the slide.

They’ll also love whirling on the spinner, always a favourite, and balancing on the “surfboard”.

There’s also swings, including a regular swing, a baby/toddler swing, and a group swing.

The base of the playground is a mix of softfall and bark chips. There are wide, accessible paths with handrails leading down from the on-street parking at Montefiore Parkway to the playground.

The paths then continue, without handrails, around the playground and down and around the drainage area, great for walking, wheelchairs or scootering. There’s plenty of grassed area around the playground, so pack the soccer ball or footy!

There’s ample seating around the playground, in the form of a bench, a picnic bench and sandstone blocks. There’s also a water fountain and bins.

While you’re at Headland Reserve, don’t forget to take in the stunning coastal views – you can see the jetty and the coastline sweeping all the way to Newcastle.
