Where is the Green Sheep Presented by Monkey Baa Theatre

If your little one (and you) knows every page of the classic picture book Where is the Green Sheep? by heart, this July is going to be very exciting.

Monkey Baa Theatre Company is bringing their much-anticipated stage adaptation to Civic Theatre Newcastle from 9 to 11 July, and it looks like a genuinely magical first theatre experience for the tiniest members of your family.

Designed for children aged 1 to 6, this immersive visual theatre show follows three farmers on their quest to find the elusive green sheep.

Along the way, young audiences will meet a wonderfully woolly cast of characters: Blue Sheep who loves blue flowers, Red Sheep who cartwheels through the fields, Bath Sheep who adores bubbles, and Bed Sheep who loves to bounce.

But still, where is that Green Sheep?

Blending puppetry, animation, and interactive screen imagery, the production brings Mem Fox and Judy Horacek’s beloved picture book to life in a way that’s designed to hold even the youngest audience members completely spellbound.

And if you’ve ever tried to keep a toddler’s attention for more than five minutes, you’ll know that’s no small feat.

Monkey Baa is the award-winning company behind Possum MagicDiary of a Wombat, and Josephine Wants to Dance, so they know exactly how to create theatre that works for very young children and the grown-ups sitting alongside them.

The production is directed by Eva Di Cesare and features real children’s voices as narrators, students from Bankstown West Public School who co-created the show, which gives it a warmth and authenticity that kids genuinely respond to.

Where is the Green Sheep? is a co-production between Monkey Baa and QPAC’s Out of the Box Festival, created in association with Arts Centre Melbourne, the Sydney Opera House, and The Art House Wyong.

Newcastle is one of just a handful of stops on the national tour, so this is a great chance to catch it close to home.

This enchanting stage adaptation has already charmed audiences around Australia, with one reviewer describing it as “a charming, clever and irresistibly woolly adventure that enchants tiny humans and big kids alike.”

Whether it’s your child’s very first theatre experience or your family already loves live performances, Where is the Green Sheep? promises to be a joyful and memorable outing these school holidays.

The stellar creative team is led by Artistic Director Eva Di Cesare (Edward the Emu, Diary of a Wombat, Where the Streets Had a Name) who was kind enough to answer our questions.

What is your role with Monkey Baa?

I am the Artistic Director and co-founder of Monkey Baa Theatre Company.

The Monkey Baa annual report says it was a year of creating dancing, planning—and a lot of laughing.

Last year we presented 2 tours and two new shows. It was a hugely creative year with many artists and children working together to make sure our audiences would get the very best in children’s theatre around the country. All our works have moments of pure delight and hilarity.

Who is the audience for the current production Where is the Green Sheep?

Predominantly this work is for children aged 1-6. What is a wonderful aspect of this production though, is that generations can enjoy it together. Grandparents, parents and their children share in the experience. There is something for everyone.

Families who love high quality storytelling and grandparents who want to share experiences. Its enjoyable and affordable and perfect for children as young as one year old

What can the audience young and not so young expect?

For some children is will be their first theatre experience.

Where is the Green Sheep? is an immersive visual theatre experience based on the beloved children’s book by Mem Fox and Judy Horacek. We meet Blue Sheep who loves blue flowers and Red Sheep who loves to cartwheel in the fields, Bath Sheep who loves bubbles and Bed Sheep who loves to bounce… But where IS that Green Sheep?
