If your kids have ever rooted for the underdog (or the under-bug), this one’s for them. Hunter Drama is bringing The Bugs to the Playhouse at Civic Theatre Newcastle from 14–24 May 2026, and it’s set to be genuinely fun night out for the whole family.
When a backyard construction project threatens an entire insect community, the bugs decide it’s time to fight back. A riotous comedy by acclaimed playwright Don Zolidis, The Bugs blends ecological chaos, labour disputes, and a dash of Greek mythology into a fast-paced theatrical adventure.

Packed with clever jokes, outrageous situations, and inventive staging, The Bugs delivers big laughs while exploring themes of teamwork, community, and environmental responsibility. It’s a playful reminder that even the smallest creatures can make a big difference when they band together.
When a pair of disgruntled honeybees discover their habitat is about to be destroyed to make way for a swimming pool, they set out to unite the insects of the yard to stop human construction. But when their plans start to unravel, they may have to turn to their ancient enemies, the spiders, for help.

The show is performed by a cast of 33 young performers aged 9 to 14, with first-time director Evelyn Parkes at the helm. There are even five sets of siblings in the cast, which adds a lovely layer for families watching from the audience.
Playwright Don Zolidis is widely recognised as one of the most-produced playwrights in the world, particularly in youth and educational theatre. Known for his witty humour, clever wordplay, and inventive storytelling, Zolidis creates work that allows young performers to stretch their comedic and dramatic skills while entertaining audiences of all ages.
Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind theatrical experience, buzzing with humour, heart, and theatrical creativity that will delight audiences of all ages.
