Families, schools and young theatre lovers are invited to hop aboard the broomstick this July as Civic Theatre Newcastle presents the much-loved children’s classic Room on the Broom.
Based on the bestselling picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, Room on the Broom has delighted generations of children with its playful story, memorable characters and heartwarming message about friendship, kindness and making room for others.
Now, the story comes to life on stage in a magical production from CDP Kids and Tall Stories, the acclaimed company behind The Gruffalo and The Smeds and The Smoos.
Perfect for children aged three and above, the show follows a kind-hearted witch and her cat as they make room on their broom for an ever-growing collection of animal passengers. But when a hungry dragon appears, the unlikely group must work together to save the day.
To celebrate the production’s arrival in Newcastle, Civic Theatre Newcastle is partnering with City of Newcastle Libraries during the Term 2 school holidays, helping young readers connect with the story before it takes flight on stage.
Families visiting participating libraries will be able to enjoy Room on the Broom-themed activities, creative workshops, giveaways and displays inspired by the beloved book.
Children can also enter a special Room on the Broom colouring-in competition for the chance to win tickets to the show, while families will have opportunities to discover more about Civic Theatre’s family-friendly programming.
The production is also perfect for preschools and primary schools, with special daytime performances available for school and childcare groups. As one of the first major children’s productions of Term 3, Room on the Broom offers a fun and engaging excursion opportunity that encourages imagination, storytelling and a love of books.
Civic Theatre Theatre Manager Leonie Wallace said the production offers a wonderful opportunity for children to experience live theatre through a story many already know and love.
“The production is a wonderful opportunity for children to experience theatre through a familiar and much-loved story. It’s imaginative, funny and heartwarming, and a great way for young audiences to see storytelling come to life on stage.” she said.
“We’re delighted to be partnering with City of Newcastle Libraries through workshops, giveaways and a colouring-in competition that encourage children and families to engage with reading, creativity and live performance.”
Whether it’s a child’s first live theatre experience or a favourite story revisited, Room on the Broom promises a joyful theatrical adventure for families, schools and young audiences alike.
Room on the Broom will be presented at Civic Theatre Newcastle on Wednesday 22 July, with performances at 10am, 12.30pm and 6pm.
