Visit the Playground at Reids Reserve at Swansea Heads

Reids Reserve Playground in Swansea Heads received a much-needed makeover in 2023. This has always been a beautiful spot in Lake Macquarie and now with the addition of a playground it’s even better. (Just ignore the construction fences behind the playground).

Located on Lambton Parade at Swansea Heads, Reids Reserve overlooks the Swansea Channel.

The playground features an integrated play structure with twisty slide, net bridge, a little shop, double slides and a small rock climbing wall.

Next to it you’ll find swings. As well as regular swing, there’s a big group swing.

There’s a dolphin themed rocker as well as a ball-filled glass contraption to peer through.

It’s all softfall flooring so its ideal for kids who don’t like bark or sand at playgrounds.

We suggest this playground suits kids 3 and up as there are open areas on the top structure, a rope tunnel and no baby swing.

There no shade at this playground and on hot days, you can feel the heat so we recommend visiting at times when it’s cooler.

Last time, we visited there were construction fences and asbestos signs. This relates to coastal erosion. Lake Macquarie City Council blocked off the area to the public due to significant coastal erosion, which exposed asbestos material.

This is the sign at the playground which explains that NSW government will be undertaking works to raise the sea wall.

Once the asbestos material is removed and the sea wall rebuilt, we’re sure that Reids Reserve will once again be a great spot.

The views across Swansea Channel and back to Lake Macquarie are pretty special.

If it’s low tide, follow the path eastward to Swansea Headland and search for fossils. Here, you’ll find remnants of a petrified forest in this interesting geological spot from a volcano eruption 250 million years ago off the Swansea coast.

You can take a self-guided walk to explore the area yourself and discover remnants of this long-ago natural phenomenon. It’s a fun activity for kids who are interested in nature and geology.
