A starry spring night under the big fig tree! The much-loved Hamilton Hawker Street Markets is back for spring, this time with a starlight mini-festival twist.
Returning Saturday 12 September 2026 from 5pm to 9pm, this spring edition marks the very first event at the newly revitalised Nyiirunba Park (Hamilton Station Park), from the producers of the fantastic Winterheat festival. It’s shaping up to be a fun community celebration.
If you have been to Hawker Markets before, you know the drill: neon lights, street food, and that unmistakable night market buzz.

This time, instead of a laneway or plaza, the whole thing spreads out across the tree-lined lawns of Nyiirunba Park under the big fig tree, giving it more of a relaxed, vibey micro-festival feel. Think classic Asian walking street energy, but with room to spread a picnic rug and let the kids run around.
A New Venue, A New Vibe
The move to Nyiirunba Park is a genuine shift for Hawker Markets. Rather than being squeezed along a single street, the market spreads across three separate outdoor dining zones dotted through the park.
It’s still got all the colour, spice and neon of a classic night market, just with more breathing room, more grass for the kids, and a proper festival layout to wander through as the sun goes down and the fairy lights take over.
What’s On the Menu

Expect mouth-watering street food and sweet treats with a touch of spice for those who dare. Vendors are 100% local, with several running special event menus just for the night.

If you loved the food line-up at past Hawker Markets, this spring edition keeps that same local-first approach while adding room for a few new faces.
Free Things for the Kids

Families are well looked after at this one. On top of the food and music, there is a genuinely solid free kids offering:
- Sideshow alley
- Face painting
- Bubbles
- Free treat carts, including free lollipops, s’mores and fairy floss
It is the kind of event where you can grab dinner, let the kids burn off energy on the grass, and still be home in time for bed. With the 5pm start, it’s perfect for families with younger children who can’t manage a late night out.
Music and Entertainment

Live music and roaming performers run throughout the evening, adding to that festival atmosphere the organisers are going for with the new park setting. Pull up a picnic rug under the fig tree and let the night unfold around you.

This event doubles as the official launch of the newly upgraded Nyiirunba Park, so expect a bit of extra fanfare as the community gets its first proper look at the space in action.

A Fresh New Look for Nyiirunba Park
This isn’t just a new location for Hawker Markets, it’s the official debut of a freshly upgraded community space. City of Newcastle has just wrapped up a $290,000 revitalisation of the park, backed by an $80,000 NSW Government Community Building Partnership grant, and shaped by feedback from the local community.
The upgrade has delivered a genuinely bigger, better footprint for events like this one. New accessible modular seating, a kerb ramp, and an all-weather gravel pathway now wind around the park and beneath the iconic Moreton Bay fig, making it far easier for pedestrians, cyclists, prams and wheelchair users to move through the space.
There’s also a new drinking bubbler, tap and dog bowl, plus colour-changeable ambient lighting on the garden bollards that will only add to the neon night market atmosphere.
You’ll also spot a new Welcome to Place sign near the entrance, featuring artwork by local Indigenous artist Koan Cashman and honouring the long relationship Traditional Custodians have with this site. Alongside it sits a community notice board and a purpose-built donation cupboard, reflecting the park’s role as a genuine gathering place for the Hamilton community.
