It’s shaping up to be a big month at Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre. On Friday 14 August, they’re running free resilience and anti-bullying workshops at all six centres (Warners Bay, Redhead, Green Hills, Morisset, Waratah and Maryland), so families across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter can find one close to home.
Then in September, Hunter Valley Martial Arts is opening its doors for an Open Day, giving kids, teens and adults the chance to try a class, meet the instructors and see what the training is really like.
Whether you’re chasing a new after-school activity, want practical tools for supporting your child through a tough patch at school, or you’ve been meaning to try martial arts yourself, there’s a lot on offer this month.
Free Resilience & Anti-Bullying Workshops
For more than 40 years, Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre has been helping families across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter develop not just physical skills, but lifelong confidence and discipline.
Hunter Valley Martial Arts believes that resilience is one of the most important life skills a young person can develop. In today’s world, young people face challenges that previous generations never had to navigate.
From bullying and social pressures to academic stress, relationship difficulties, school refusal and anxiety about the future, many children, teens and families are looking for practical tools to help them thrive.
They will be presenting Resilience and Anti-Bullying Workshops, taking place on Friday 14 August at Hunter Valley Martial Arts at all their locations: Warners Bay, Redhead, Green Hills, Morisset, Waratah and Maryland, so you can pick a centre close to home or school.
These workshops are completely free for anyone to attend, including members and their families and will provide practical strategies that can be used immediately at home, at school and in everyday life.
Whether you’re a parent wanting to support your child through difficult times, a student struggling in school, or a young adult looking to build confidence and resilience, these sessions are designed to help.
Workshop One: Families, Anti-Bullying and School Refusal

Friday 14 August
5:00pm – 5:45pm
The first workshop is designed specifically for parents, carers, children under 12 and families. Bullying remains one of the biggest concerns facing families today. While schools continue to work hard to create safe environments, many parents feel unsure about how best to support their child when bullying occurs.
This session covers practical strategies for responding to bullying, supporting kids through friendship difficulties and building family resilience. There’s also a strong focus on school refusal, which has become a common challenge for Hunter families, with tools to help identify the causes and support kids back into a positive routine.
The workshop will also focus on family resilience helping families develop stronger communication, healthier relationships and greater confidence when facing life’s challenges together.
Attendance at the workshops are free but registration is required and tend to fill fast. Register via the Hunter Valley Martial Arts website.
Workshop Two: Resilience for Life (Ages 12+)

Friday 14 August
6:00pm – 6:45pm
The second workshop is aimed at young adults and teenagers preparing for the challenges of adolescence and early adulthood who are facing increasing expectations from school, social media, friendships, family commitments and future career decisions.
This interactive workshop will focus on developing resilience and practical life skills that can help young people navigate these challenges with confidence. Topics include managing exam pressure and academic stress, building resilience during setbacks and disappointments, dealing with peer pressure and developing confidence and self-belief.
Participants will learn practical techniques that can help them stay calm under pressure, communicate more effectively and approach challenges with a positive mindset. These are skills that don’t just help during school years—they become valuable tools for life.
Attendance at the workshops are free but registration is required and tend to fill fast. Register via the Hunter Valley Martial Arts website.
Open Day at Hunter Valley Martial Arts This September

Hunter Valley Martial Arts is opening its doors this September with an Open Day on September 12 & 13 at all six centres (Warners Bay, Redhead, Green Hills, Morisset, Waratah and Maryland), inviting children, teens and adults to try martial arts in a welcoming, supportive environment.
Whether you’re after better fitness, more confidence, or support for your own or your child’s development, martial arts offers a lot more than physical training. It’s a pathway to personal growth, discipline and skills that last well beyond the mat.
The Benefits of Studying a Martial Art
Martial arts training aims to build the whole person: body, mind and character. Students learn practical self-defence skills while also developing strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance. Regular training builds focus, goal-setting and perseverance, and teaches students how to face challenges with resilience and determination.
Beyond the physical side, martial arts builds confidence and self-control. Students learn to respect themselves and others, work as part of a team and take pride in their own progress. Those lessons carry over into everyday life at school, at work and in relationships.
Kids can join age-based classes designed to build confidence, discipline, focus and resilience through practical, supportive training. Older kids and adults can try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which builds fitness and problem-solving alongside self-defence skills, or Fight Fit, a martial arts-inspired fitness class that’s a solid alternative to a standard gym workout. No experience is needed for any of it.
Supporting Children with Learning Challenges
Martial arts can make a real difference for children who experience learning difficulties, attention challenges or low confidence in a traditional classroom setting. Kids often do well with structured activities, clear expectations and consistent routines, and can feel safer and more confident in the kind of environment martial arts provides. Lessons are broken into achievable steps, giving every child a chance to experience success and build belief in their own abilities.
Martial arts also supports better concentration, memory and emotional regulation. Children learn to listen, follow instructions and manage their energy in positive ways. Many parents notice improvements in confidence, behaviour and engagement at school once kids start to see themselves as capable and resilient.
