An Apple A Day: Fresh Fruit & Veggie Boxes Delivered to Your Door

If you’re trying to get more fresh fruit and vegetables into your family’s meals, but don’t love wandering the supermarket aisles each week, there’s a local solution that many Newcastle and Lake Macquarie families are already loving.

An Apple A Day, located in Tighes Hill, is a locally owned fruit and vegetable grocer that specialises in fresh, seasonal produce and convenient weekly fruit and veggie boxes.

Their subscription boxes take the stress out of meal planning and shopping, helping busy families keep their kitchens stocked with fresh produce without the usual hassle.

Even better? You can have your box delivered straight to your door across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

From Backyard Collective to Newcastle Favourite

An Apple A Day started in the most Newcastle way possible: on a back deck with friends.

Founder Shereen Morris, a paediatric physiotherapist with a passion for nutrition and fresh food, began sourcing high-quality fruit and vegetables for her own family back in 2016.

Friends quickly noticed the difference in the produce she was buying, so Shereen started purchasing in bulk and sharing it with a small group of local families. For several years it remained a casual fruit and veggie collective for around 20 families.

Then came 2020. During the first COVID lockdown, the little collective quickly transformed into a business. Within days, an online ordering platform was live and dozens of Newcastle families were ordering weekly boxes of fresh produce.

Demand exploded during the following lockdowns, with hundreds of boxes being packed each week from a small garage in Mayfield.

Today, An Apple A Day has a permanent home at 173 Maitland Road, Tighes Hill, where the team continues to supply fresh produce to households across Newcastle.

Fresh, Quality Fruit and Vegetables

At An Apple A Day, “quality” doesn’t mean perfectly shaped supermarket produce. In fact, the team embraces fruit and vegetables that look exactly the way nature intended. Curly carrots, bumpy tomatoes and slightly wonky apples are all welcome here. For the team, quality means something much simpler: Fresh produce that tastes the way it should.

The fruit and vegetables are carefully sourced each week and selected for freshness, flavour and seasonal variety. Customers often notice the difference straight away with produce that stays fresh longer, tastes better and makes everyday meals more enjoyable.

The store shelves are also packed with locally produced pantry items, making it easy to support other Hunter region producers at the same time.

Locally Owned and Community Focused

An Apple A Day is a proudly locally owned and operated Newcastle business, built around the idea that food brings people together.

Shereen and the team are passionate about helping families eat more fresh food while also making the whole experience easier and more enjoyable.

Customers regularly pop in for a chat, recipe ideas or tips on how to cook unfamiliar ingredients that appear in their weekly box. It’s part grocery shop, part community hub.

Flexible Fruit & Veggie Subscription Boxes

One of the biggest reasons families love An Apple A Day is the flexible fruit and veggie box subscription. Instead of spending time choosing every item individually, you simply select a box size and let the team create a seasonal mix for you.

The subscription boxes are designed by a mum who understands what families actually eat. There’s no point receiving a box full of produce your family won’t use, so the fruit and veggie boxes are built around flexibility and and produce that works for real family meals.

Each box changes weekly to reflect what’s fresh and in season.

Choose from three box sizes

Small box
Perfect for individuals or couples.

Medium box
Ideal for families of 2–4.

Large box
Great for bigger households or families who go through lots of fruit and vegetables.

Customers can choose between mixed fruit and veggie boxes, fruit-only boxes or vegetable-only boxes, depending on what works best for their household.

Each box changes weekly to reflect what’s fresh and in season, which means families often discover new produce they might not usually buy.

Flexible Subscriptions That Work Around Family Life

One of the reasons An Apple A Day has become so popular with local families is the flexibility of the subscription system.

Subscriptions can be managed easily online, allowing customers to:

  • Order on a weekly or fortnightly basis
  • Skip a box when they’re away
  • Change box sizes
  • Add extra items from the store
  • Adjust their order before delivery or collection

Subscribers also receive 15% off compared to in-store pricing, making it a convenient option for regular grocery shopping.

The Swaps Box (A Family Favourite)

If you’ve ever bought a veggie box before, you’ll know that sometimes there’s an ingredient your family just won’t eat. An Apple A Day has a simple solution. It’s called The Swaps Box.

If there’s something in your box you don’t need or won’t use, you can simply swap it for something else when collecting your order in store. It’s a small idea that customers say makes a big difference, especially for families with kids who have strong food preferences.

  • Paper bags
  • Reusable cardboard boxes
  • Minimal packaging wherever possible

The store also promotes sustainable products and encourages customers to make small changes that collectively make a big difference.

As the team puts it:

“Sustainability is a journey. If we all change 1% at a time we’re making progress.”

Fresh Produce Guarantee

The team keeps their promise simple. If your fruit or vegetables aren’t fresh, they’ll replace or refund them.

What Families Are Saying

Many local families have already made An Apple A Day part of their weekly routine.

‘We’ve tried other fruit and veg boxes and An Apple A Day wins hands down in terms of quality of produce, variety and the ability to swap items to tailor for your family’s needs and tastes. It has been a game changer for us; to make sure we always have fresh fruit and veg on hand, for healthy home-made meals and kids lunch boxes. Each box is thoughtfully put together with not just apples and oranges, but fruit the kids will actually eat! We’ve been pleasantly surprised in recent months with beautiful blood oranges, purple carrots, passion fruit, strawberries… It’s so convenient and generous, a medium box lasts 2 weeks for our family of 4.’

‘It takes the effort out of shopping weekly. We meal plan and shop fortnightly and An Apple A Day takes care of the rest (incl eggs & milk). We no longer wander around the supermarket’s “fresh” fruit & veggie section wondering what is actually in season, pondering unit prices and if that is expensive or not and thinking about how long a piece of food has been in a truck & warehouse.’

‘At An Apple a Day, you can grab wholesome food and amazing quality products. All the things we love: Low tox homewares, eco-friendly, fresh produce. There is no risk with An Apple A Day fruit and veggie boxes. You can pause or cancel any time. You can swap things out. All the veggies are family friendly and pretty much things you will already be using. Everything is so fresh & I love that there is zero plastic & unnecessary packaging. I have recommended to everyone I know.’
