There’s a new indoor play centre Pixie Play Café that’s just opened in Rathmines and Newy with Kids dropped in to check it out. It’s adorable!
The brainchild of local parents Alex and Moana Arias, Pixie Play Café is Lake Macquarie’s first boutique indoor playground designed for kids aged 0 – 6.
The idea for Pixie Play Café began from their own experience as parents and the clear need for a dedicated indoor space on the western side of Lake Macquarie.
As Moana explains “With a four-year-old and a two-year-old at the time, I found there was simply nowhere nearby to meet a friend, sit down with a proper coffee, and let the kids play safely without screens or guilt. This area has plenty of beautiful outdoor spots, but when the weather turns, gets too hot, or you simply need an indoor breather, options for young children are almost nonexistent.”
The couple recognised their community desperately needed this kind of space, and they were determined to create it right here on the western side of Lake Macquarie. Even when opportunities popped up in Belmont and Warners Bay, they knew this was where families needed it most.
As the Rathmines warehouse slowly transformed, the creative journey became just as meaningful as the destination. You’ll notice the artwork as soon as you enter Pixie Play Cafe. Moana channeled her artistic side during the lengthy approval process, with the painting becoming a form of therapy.
“Painting our 7-metre by 3-metre mural—a whale floating from a hot air balloon with two little kids sitting on the whales back – accompanied with the words ‘Dream Big’ felt like returning to my artistic roots. It became a reminder for both little ones and parents that dreams are worth chasing; Pixie Play Café is exactly that for us.”
The entire space reflects this philosophy. What was once a grey, concrete warehouse is now a vibrant, pastel-filled haven that’s lively yet calming, engaging yet gentle on the senses. Every corner was designed with intention, creating somewhere families immediately feel at ease.
With thoughtfully designed play zones, high-end facilities, and plenty of magical touches, Pixie Play is all about sparking imagination, encouraging creativity, and giving families a safe, welcoming space to connect and play.
From the fun ballpit area in the front, climbing area in the middle to the Pixie market and play kitchen in the back, there’s lots for little ones to explore.
(And it’s not just kids having fun! When we visited, we saw parents in the ball pit enjoying themselves as much as the kids).
While kids play, grown-ups can look on and enjoy a one-of-a-kind cafe experience.
You’ll find a delicious frozen yoghurt station, wholesome snacks, and plenty of healthy options – including gluten-free and vegan treats for families with dietary needs.
Pixie Play Café isn’t large like other play centres, so there’s a limit to how many families can be there at one time. As a smaller, boutique-style play café, they’ve found that keeping numbers limited makes the experience safer, calmer, and more enjoyable for both children and parents.
To avoid disappointment, it’s recommended that you book ahead for a 90 minute session.
Pixie Play Café is available to host birthday parties in their charming private party room, located upstairs for a little extra privacy and magic. The room is thoughtfully set up with two kids’ tables and seating for up to 12 children, plus a comfortable adults’ table and chairs so grown-ups can relax and join the fun.
The space features a neutral, super-cute décor that suits any celebration and you’re welcome to bring your own decorations, food, and drinks to match your chosen theme. To make the day even more special, Pixie Play Café will feature a custom birthday announcement hand-drawn just for your child on a large blackboard wall.
You can also do private hire. Whether you’re celebrating something special or just want a fun, private space for your little crew, book out the entire venue. The 3-hour private hire includes: Private Function Room Upstairs, Play Area Downstairs – enjoy exclusive access to all our play equipment, sensory ball pit’s & imagination play nook and Cafe Staff Service – Their team will be on hand to serve delicious frozen yogurt, coffee, and other snacks.
