Newcastle Weather in Summer

Summers (December to February) tend to be warm to hot with average temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). Occasionally, temperatures can rise above 30°C (86°F) during heatwaves.

By the coast, the sea breeze keeps the temperature a bit cooler. But the further west you go, the more the temperatures increase. In summer, Maitland can be 3 to 5 degrees hotter.

On a really hot summer day, something to hope for is the Southerly buster, an abrupt southerly wind change. This weather event is a welcome relief as temperature changes can be dramatic, with falls of 10 – 15 °C often occurring in less than an hour.

They travel from the south coast of NSW to the mid-north coast, and usually reach our region by the later afternoon or evening.

It’s also this time of year when we can get East Coast Lows, a weather event that brings destructive winds, torrential rainfall and rough seas that come with stronger east coast lows.

These intense low pressure systems happen, on average, several times each year off Australia’s East coast. They can occur at any time of year but are more common during autumn and winter, most frequently in June.

In fact, it was the June long weekend in 2007 when a severe East Coast Low storm lashed the Newcastle region. It resulted in the coal shop, the Pasha Bulker running aground at Nobbys Beach.

As well as East Coast Lows, there’s also potential for snow in the region. You’ll need to head to Barrington Tops which is located north of Newcastle. This triangular mountain range is located between Gloucester, Dungog and Scone and regularly gets fleeting snowfall between May and August.

It’s even snowed closer to Newcastle. Snow fell at Mount Sugarloaf on July 18, 1965  according to a plaque erected by the Cardiff Lions Club at the summit of the hill.
