Winter Family Day Out: Redhead

If you’re after a family day with a little adventure and loads of natural beauty, Redhead is the spot. With walking tracks, scenic lookouts, beach access and a playground by the sea, it’s a fun and flexible day out for all ages – especially in winter when the air is crisp and the beach is quieter.

This day out is part of our Family Day Out series – free and low-cost itineraries around Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter, created to help families enjoy the best of the region.

Start your day with a coffee from the Redhead Surf Life Saving Club, then enjoy the ocean views from the beach. The headland and iconic Shark Tower make this one of Lake Macquarie’s most recognisable beaches.

Redhead Beach

From here, head to Collier Street to access the Awabakal Walk – a 2km trail that stretches from Redhead to Dudley. You can do the whole track or just enjoy a shorter loop.

Along the way, stop at the Awabakal Viewpoint for sweeping views back toward Newcastle – it’s also a great spot for whale watching during the winter months.

Hot Tip: If you want to do the full Awabakal Walk one-way, catch the 48 bus to Dudley and walk back to Redhead. Or bring a second car for a car shuffle.

Back in Redhead, let the kids explore the sand or wander along the beach. Redhead is great for beachcombing and stretching little legs, especially during low tide when there’s plenty of space to run.

Webb Park Redhead

For lunch, grab something from the Redhead shops or bring a picnic to enjoy at Webb Park, located just behind the beach. The shaded, beach-themed playground is a big hit with younger kids and has plenty of room for a relaxing break.

Your kids can also burn energy at Redhead Pump Track which features a 150m track overlooking Redhead Beach. The pump track is designed for all skill levels, from beginners to expert riders, and is suitable for bikes, skateboards and scooters.

To round out your visit, head to the Ken and Audrey Owens Walkway. This flat, easy path follows the edge of Redhead Beach through coastal bushland and wetlands. It’s 2.5km return and perfect for prams, scooters or just a slow family stroll.
