A new recreation spot incorporating a skate park, pump track and multi-court is now open in Rathmines, on the western side of Lake Macquarie.
Newy with Kids visited the Rathmines Youth Hub last week to check out the upgraded space and it’s already pumping with kids, teens and adults.
The Youth Hub is large and impressive with a skate park, pump track and multi-court and has room for lots of people.
We were lucky enough to run into Matt from Parreys Skatepark who explained that this is street-scape style skate park.
He highlighted the use of street elements like ledges, banks, quarters, and rails in the design and mentioned that it makes for a more interesting experience.
He also pointed out it’s a super smooth skate park so ideal for skateboards and scooters who need a smooth surface.
The Convic constructed plaza-style skate park features a mini ramp, banks and quarters, rails and boxes, a cantilevered wave, manual pads, hubbas and stairs, with an ‘electric’ colour palette across the surface.
Located next to the skate park is the Rathmines pump track, the second pump track in Lake Macquarie. World-renowned Velosolutions, who delivered the city’s first pump track at Redhead, constructed the 120 metre Rathmines circuit, which features multiple line options, rollers, berms and doubles.
Unlike the Redhead Pump Track which is suited to intermediate to advanced, Matt advises that the Rathmines Pump Track is for beginners to intermediate riders, and is suitable for bikes, skateboards and scooters.
For those unfamiliar with the concept of a pump track, it’s a circuit of rollers, banked turns and jumps.
Pump tracks are designed to be ridden by riders “pumping” and generating momentum through moving their bodies up and down, instead of pedalling or pushing. The design of the track means that there are different routes that riders can take.
There’s also a multi-sport court with half-court basketball feature.
