Just an hour’s drive from Newcastle, Huntlee is worth the drive just to visit the amazing District Park One playground, complete with café, half basketball court and fully-fenced, off-leash dog area.
But now there’s even more reason to visit, with the opening of a second major playground in June 2025.
Pack the bikes, scooters, and helmets – the pump track and playground at Katherine’s Landing District Park guarantee a family day out you don’t want to miss!
Located less than a 5-minute drive from District Park One, Katherine’s Landing District Park is an inclusive and accessible multi-use public space featuring a huge playground, a world-class pump track, large grassed areas and amenities.
The closest parking is on-street on Triton Boulevard or McGann Drive, with three disabled parking spaces located on McGann Drive.
While you’re busy unpacking the bikes and scooters, the kids will already be making their way to the inviting playground. The first thing my school-aged kids spotted was the huge climbing tunnel. The enormous, netted area and climbing walls at either end, allow many kids to climb up, over, around, and through all at once, creating plenty of opportunities for social interaction.
Inclusive elements include two inground trampolines, a nest swing, group hammock and wide, accessible recreation paths.
The trampolines form part of a toddler obstacle course with a clearly defined START and FINISH. My kids and their friends completed the course many times over, playing a ‘Floor is Lava’ style game while navigating the trampolines, mounds, balance beams, and cargo net.
Most kids love a nest swing, and the one at this playground won’t disappoint. Comfortably accommodating up to four kids, it swings in all directions.
Next to the playground is a large, grassed area, ideal for games. We saw a number of kids having fun playing soccer here, so don’t forget to pack a ball!
This space is also ideal for a picnic, so add a picnic blanket to the list! If you want to cook up a sausage sizzle, there’s two free gas barbecues. With four undercover picnic tables, accessible amenities (including a baby change table) and plenty of bins and water fountains scattered throughout, Katherine’s Landing District Park is also a great place for a birthday party or celebration.
While shade is currently limited, numerous trees, including gums, have been planted and will eventually provide great cover.
With pump tracks gaining in popularity, it makes sense that one has been included in the Katherine’s Landing District Park design. Designed by BMX champions, this pump track suits beginner to intermediate riders and is suitable for bikes and scooters.
While the pump track was busy on the day we visited, all kids were being inclusive and respectful, even allowing little ones on balance bikes to join in the fun. There’s a clear entry and exit point to the pump track, making it safer for everyone.
A dedicated outdoor exercise circuit, suitable for all fitness levels, lets you work out while the kids have a blast on the playground and pump track. With a variety of ways to stay active and test your strength – including some irresistible monkey bars – this is easily one of the best exercise circuits I’ve seen!
So, for families seeking an inexpensive and unforgettable day out, Huntlee is your new go-to destination! With not one, but two amazing playgrounds, an awesome pump track for little riders, and more, it’s the perfect escape from the city. Pack up the kids, bikes, and a picnic – a day of adventures awaits!
