Learn About Science at the 2025 Hunter Science Festival at Newcastle Museum

Don’t miss the 2025 Hunter Science Festival at Newcastle Museum on Sunday 17 August from 10am to 2pm.

This hugely popular day is filled with FREE science fun and hands-on experiences for kids of all ages! 

This year, kids can build and race a solar car, build and test a solar boat, pick up a free plant, be a poo on the HMRI Poo Palace, climb aboard a garbage truck, visit interactive stalls and more!

  • Come and be a poo on the HMRI Poo Palace 
  • Build and race a solar car with Hunter Valley Electric Vehicles
  • Pick up a free plant with City of Newcastle’s Environmental team
  • Climb aboard a real City of Newcastle Garbage truck and talk to the driver
  • See a Fizzics Education Big Science Big Fun! science show
  • Calculate your environmental footprint with City of Newcastle’s Climate Change and Sustainability team
  • Build and test a solar boat with the Port Authority
  • Chill out with LEGO® or a science book in the Newcastle Libraries zone
  • Meet a Scientist! Talks by local Hunter scientists
  • Try your hand at all the activities from Hunter Water, Irukanji Shark and Ray Centre, The Groundswell Collective, Hunter Astronomical Society, CleanAS Energy, Hunter Geological Society, Newy With Kids, Rusty Coding Club and more!

Drop-in event, no bookings required! Tickets to HMRI Poo Palace and Fizzics Education science shows available free to pick up from 9:45am on the day.

When it’s time to eat, the Newcastle Rotary Club will be firing up the BBQ, and KT Bakes Cakes will be on hand with science-themed sweet treats. Alternatively, take your own picnic to enjoy under the umbrellas on Museum Lawn.

The festival is a celebration of all things science in the Hunter and is hosted by Newcastle Museum, Hunter Innovation and Science Hub, and and Hunter Medical and Research Institute.

The Hunter Science Festival is part of National Science Week.
