Maitland Regional Art Gallery’s Free Art January is back with a bang in 2025! Head there for some school holiday fun.
Discover printmaking with fruit stamps, create a paper and wire sculpture of your favourite bird, write and perform bird-inspired poetry, get silly and expressive with improv or learn the basics of animation.
MRAG’s friendly artist educators will be hosting drop-in workshops, or fly in at any time to enjoy a self-directed activity while you explore current exhibitions.
Secure your spot when bookings open from 1 January or from 6 January for workshops later in the month

Plus, MRAG is opening every day of the week during January and staying open late on select nights to help you make the most of what’s on offer.
There is something for everyone throughout the month-long extravaganza with activities for kids, family groups, teens and adults.
As well as a month-long festival of engaging art activities for all ages, there’s also six exhibitions to experience including TWITCHER, an exhibition dedicated to art and birds.

To tie into this exhibition, there’s fun workshops including:
- Tweet Tweet Twitcher bird craft activity
- Draw the Regent Honeyeater
- Spoken Bird Poetry
- Beak Out with Avian Improv
- Talk about the Regent Honeyeater
Plus, you can come along to Free Art Sunday, MRAG’s weekly program connecting children and families with art through hands-on activities facilitated by their friendly MRAG Art Tutors.

There’s also fun tech animation workshops. Your kids can dive into the exciting world of animation and bring their imagination to life in animation workshops for tweens and teens.
Free Art Gallery offers something for all ages and runs from 2 January to 31 January, Monday to Friday. Seraphine café is also open 7 days a week during this time. Both Gallery and Café are closed 1 January, 26 & 27 January.
Free Art January is FREE (of course!) and all materials for activities and workshops are provided.
