Redhead is the kind of place that feels like a holiday, even if you’re only visiting for the day. With one of the region’s most photogenic beaches, an ocean-themed playground and scenic coastal walks, this laid-back spot is ideal for a summer family outing.
This is part of the Newy with Kids Family Day Out series, a collection of local adventures to enjoy across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter.
Start with a coffee from the Redhead Surf Life Saving Club and enjoy the sweeping views over the beach. The iconic Shark Tower and rocky headland make this one of the most recognisable beaches in the area.
For a morning adventure, set out on the Awabakal Walk. Access it via Collier Street, and follow the bush track along the cliffs. It’s about 2km one way to Dudley, but you can do a shorter section and still enjoy the amazing views. Stop at the Awabakal Viewpoint to look north toward Newcastle, or south toward the Central Coast.
Hot tip: If you want to do the full Awabakal Walk one way, catch the 48 bus from Newcastle to Dudley and walk back to Redhead. You can also do a car shuffle with another family. Visit the toilets at the Surf Club before heading off on the walk — there are no facilities along the track.
After your walk, return to Redhead Beach for a swim between the flags or just a paddle at the water’s edge. It’s a patrolled beach in summer and perfect for families who enjoy the surf.
Your kids can also burn energy at Redhead Pump Track which features a 150m track overlooking Redhead Beach. The pump track is designed for all skill levels, from beginners to expert riders, and is suitable for bikes, skateboards and scooters.
Next, head to Webb Park, located just behind the beach. This bright and beachy playground is a favourite with younger kids and a great shady spot for lunch. Pick up some takeaway from the local shops or bring a picnic to enjoy under the trees.
Still have energy to burn? Finish your visit with a walk or scoot along the Ken and Audrey Owens Walkway. This flat, family-friendly path runs through sand dunes and coastal vegetation alongside the beach. It’s around 2.5km return and is great for prams, scooters and bikes.
Redhead is one of those places where you can easily spend a full day without rushing. With walking tracks, waves, and space to unwind, it’s a great summer spot for families who love the outdoors and want to enjoy the coast at their own pace.
