Looking for a nature-filled family day with plenty of shade, animal encounters and spots to cool off? This summer itinerary combines Blackbutt Reserve with nearby Lambton Park and Pool for a relaxed day out that’s close to home but full of variety.
Part of our Newy with Kids Family Day Out series, this New Lambton combo is ideal for warm days, especially when you want a mix of play, wildlife and water fun.
Start at the Black Duck area at Carnley Avenue, where the Bower Bird Playground is perfect for kids aged 2 to 10. There’s a large climbing structure, roundabout, see-saw, group swing and more. It’s shaded and surrounded by bushland, so it feels peaceful even when it’s busy.
Next, stroll along the pram-friendly boardwalks to the Blackbutt wildlife enclosures. You’ll see birds, reptiles, wombats, emus, kangaroos and koalas. It’s a great way to get up close to Australian animals without leaving the city.
Then hop in the car and drive around to the Richley Reserve side of Blackbutt, where you’ll find a huge 60-metre-long adventure playground set in leafy surrounds. There’s equipment for all ages and plenty of space for a picnic or shady rest under the trees.
For lunch, either stop in at one of the Orchardtown Road cafés or pick up some takeaway to enjoy at Lambton Park, just a short drive away.
The rotunda and big shady trees make it a lovely picnic spot.
After lunch, head into Lambton Pool (entry fees apply).
There’s an outdoor pool, a splash zone with a tipping bucket and a 100-metre waterslide (waterslide open on most summer weekends) — perfect for summer. There’s also plenty of shade, grassed areas and spots to relax while the kids swim or play.
Hot tip: Buy an all-day parking ticket at Blackbutt so you can use it at both Carnley and Richley Reserves.
Bonus: Download the Newy with Kids Blackbutt Scavenger Hunt to keep little explorers busy along the boardwalks.
