Blackbutt Reserve is one of Newcastle’s most-loved family destinations and for good reason. With native wildlife, boardwalks, fun playgrounds and bush walks, it’s the perfect spot for an easygoing family day out that feels a little wild (without leaving the city).
This itinerary is part of our Newy with Kids Family Day Out series, free and low-cost adventures around Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter that are big on fun and small on budget.
Blackbutt Reserve is free to enter, and you only need to cover parking and lunch.
Start your day at Carnley Avenue Reserve, where the Bower Bird Playground is designed for kids aged 2 – 10. There’s a climbing structure, roundabout, group swing, musical play, and more.
It’s a great spot to stretch little legs before heading off to explore.
Just a short stroll away are the wildlife exhibits, accessed via pram-friendly boardwalks.
Kids can see koalas, wombats, lizards, snakes, emus and kangaroos up close.
The wildlife enclosures are always a hit with animal lovers and a great way to introduce young ones to Aussie wildlife.
After animal adventures, hop in the car and head around to Richley Reserve on the other side of Blackbutt.
This is where you’ll find the Blackbutt Adventure Playground, a huge 60-metre long playspace set in natural surroundings.
With zones for all ages, it’s perfect for siblings to enjoy together.
When everyone’s worked up an appetite, you’ve got a few good options. Head to the Orchardtown Road shops nearby for a casual café lunch, or grab takeaway and set up a picnic under the trees at Richley Reserve.
If the weather’s nice and you’ve got time to spare, finish the day with a gentle bushwalk in Blackbutt Reserve. The Tall Trees Walk is a flat, pram-accessible 2.6km return track through the bush. It’s ideal for families wanting a slower pace and some fresh air.
Hot Tip: Grab an all-day parking ticket so you can move between the Carnley and Richley sides without paying twice!
