Five years ago, City of Newcastle (CN) set out to create a clear vision for sport and recreation across Newcastle. The first Strategic Sports Plan adopted in 2020 laid the groundwork for better facilities and more opportunities for people of all ages to get active and enjoy our open spaces and sports facilities.
Since then, many of those goals have been delivered – and now it’s time to look ahead. CN has launched engagement on the draft Strategic Sports Plan and they want to hear how Newcastle’s families are using local sports and recreation facilities and what they’d like to see more of.
Why this matters for families

This isn’t just about organised sport, it’s about all the ways you use our sports and recreation facilities. Whether it’s a trike ride with your toddler, shooting hoops with your teens, enjoying a jog or a walk, taking part in organised sport or kicking a ball on the grass with your family, they want to hear from you.
By filling out a quick survey you’ll be helping CN ensure that the Strategic Sports Plan is reflective of the community broadly so that CN can plan for shared, multi-use spaces.
The plan seeks to:
- Improve the quality and accessibility of existing facilities
- Plan for future demand as our population grows
- Create flexible spaces for different sports and activities
- Build a more sustainable and climate-resilient future
Listening to our community
The best outcomes happen when we all work together.

Local sporting groups and clubs have shared their insights and are helping shape the direction of the Strategic Sports Plan, but CN know there’s more to hear.
By sharing your thoughts, you can help influence:
- The types of facilities CN invests in
- How spaces are designed and used
- Opportunities for future generations to stay active
Let’s build it together

The Strategic Sports Plan is about creating spaces where everyone feels welcome – no matter how they choose to play, move or connect.
Sport and recreation are a big part of everyday life. From weekend games or after-school training to a casual kick at the park or cheering from the sidelines, these shared moments help keep families active, connected and healthy.
How to have your say
Between 1 April and 11 May 2026, CN is inviting you to:
- Complete an 8-minute survey
- Participate in a quick Poll
- Speak with the CN team when you see them out and about at pop-up events
Your feedback will help shape the framework for planning, prioritising and improving sporting infrastructure – so that Newcastle can continue to be a city that thrives in sport and loves staying active.
