It’s that time of year again when the Christmas Bus returns. Jump on board and enjoy the Christmas spirit on the Newcastle Transport network.
Christmas Bus
For a fun Christmas activity, jump on the Christmas bus which runs from Monday 1 until Thursday 25 December.
It’s been decked out with fun Christmas decorations and will be playing jolly Christmas tunes as it transports passengers around Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
A few years ago, we went for a ride on the Christmas bus to check it out. You can spot the Christmas bus as it approaches as it’s brightly decorated.
The driver was also dressed up as as well in summer Christmas gear.
As we entered the bus, it was filled with lots of Christmas decorations. The floor and poles were also wrapped in colourful patterns.
There were also decals on the windows so you could get a Christmas-themed selfie.
You may be lucky and spot the bus during your usual commute or check out the Christmas Bus timetable to find out where and when you can catch it!
There are heaps of routes that you can choose from no matter where you live in the Newcastle Transport zone.
Our Tips for Christmas Bus
- For those with little kids, choose a midday route – outside of the school services.
- Choose a short bus route. These are fun excursions to do with little ones who might not have the attention span for a longer bus ride. We started near Newcastle Interchange and took the Christmas bus to New Lambton.
- Once you identify which route you want to take to ride on the Christmas bus, look up the schedule for the bus and find the correct bus stop.
- Don’t forget your Opal Card to tap on and off. If you don’t have an Opal card, you can use a contactless payment card such as an American Express, Visa or Mastercard for the same fare.
- Depending on how old your kids are, they may need a ticket. Child/Youth Opal cards and Opal single trip ticket are for children aged 4–15 years. Children aged three years and under travel free.
- For cheaper bus trips, travel after 10am and before 3pm. There is no off-peak discount when using an Opal single ticket so use your Opal Card or a contactless-enabled credit, debit card to pay.
