Looking for something a little different to do with the kids on a warm summer evening? Civic Park is set to come alive these school holidays with Acquist, a FREE outdoor dance performance that’s as visually stunning as it is family-friendly.
Presented by Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub, Acquist is a site-specific contemporary dance work performed right in the heart of Civic Park.
As the sun sets, six professional dancers take to the park, weaving together movement inspired by water, weather and shifting surfaces. At times, it even looks as though the performers are walking on water – a magical moment that’s sure to stop kids (and adults) in their tracks.
Before the main performance begins, families can enjoy live music from Newcastle performer Zackari Watt, followed by a powerful First Nations performance by Zachary O’Connell, honouring Country and setting the tone for the evening.
With food available from local eateries and plenty of space to spread out on the grass, this is the kind of relaxed summer outing that works just as well for families with primary-aged kids as it does for teens who enjoy something creative and a bit out of the ordinary with their friends.
The performances are proudly supported by City of Newcastle, helping to bring high-quality arts experiences into public spaces for the whole community to enjoy.
The Acquist performances are scheduled for:
- Acquist Performance 1: Thursday 22 January at 6:30pm
- Acquist Performance 2: Friday 23 January at 6:30pm
- Acquist Performance 3: Saturday 24 January at 6:30pm
If your family is curious about how performances like this come together, there’s also an Artist Talk on Saturday 24 January at 2pm, hosted by the Newcastle Art Gallery.
Hear from Catapult Artistic Director Cadi McCarthy and cast members as they chat about the inspiration behind Acquist and its connection to the sculptural work of Margel Hinder.
