What Should I Look For in a Reusable Mask?
Dr Jessica Stokes-Parish from the University of Newcastle provides some tips on choosing a reusable mask.
- Look for something with a minimum of 3 layers
- Select something with a mix of fabrics (cotton & polypropylene, cotton & polyester)
- If using cotton only, use a high-thread count (120+)
- If using cotton only, use a minimum of 4 layers
- Avoid stretchy fabrics
- Don’t fall for marketing gimmicks like copper or silver threads
- Don’t use a mask with a valve – these are for air pollution, NOT viral particles. The valve will allow viral particles out, which is what we don’t want.
She also recommends, when using the mask to:
- Wash daily in warm soapy water
- Use hand hygiene prior to and following applying/removing the mask
- Store it in a sealable bag between uses when you’re out and about so that you’re containing any particles
