Looking to buy a face mask in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie & Hunter region? With COVID-19 cases emerging again in NSW and a lockdown in Greater Sydney, face masks are required again.
In regional NSW, masks will be compulsory in all indoor non-residential settings, including workplaces, and at organised outdoor events.
Please note: NSW Health advises that masks should not be worn by toddlers under 2 years of age and babies, as they are a choking and suffocation risk. Children 12 years and under are exempt but are encouraged to wear masks where practicable.
We’ve put together a list of places where you can purchase reusable cloth masks in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie & Hunter (and a few on the Central Coast).
DISCLOSURE: Please note the masks listed in this article are not medical-grade masks and not guaranteed to protect against COVID-19. These masks are not a replacement for medical-grade Personal Protective Equipment, but rather are personal use masks. We understand that cloth masks are not as effective as medical masks. However, cloth masks have been demonstrated to reduce transmission of micro-organisms, and with correct fit and use, cloth masks can be effective in offering some protection to droplet transmission from coughing and sneezing.
Two layers or three layers? Currently, health officials recommending a mask of three layers of a mix of breathable fabrics to ensure adequate protection. However, they accept that any face mask or covering is better than none. Check out the tips on choosing a reusable mask from Dr Jessica Stokes-Parish from the University of Newcastle at the end of the article.

What Should I Look For in a Reusable Mask?
Dr Jessica Stokes-Parish from the University of Newcastle provides some tips on choosing a reusable mask.
- Look for something with a minimum of 3 layers
- Select something with a mix of fabrics (cotton & polypropylene, cotton & polyester)
- If using cotton only, use a high-thread count (120+)
- If using cotton only, use a minimum of 4 layers
- Avoid stretchy fabrics
- Don’t fall for marketing gimmicks like copper or silver threads
- Don’t use a mask with a valve – these are for air pollution, NOT viral particles. The valve will allow viral particles out, which is what we don’t want.
She also recommends, when using the mask to:
- Wash daily in warm soapy water
- Use hand hygiene prior to and following applying/removing the mask
- Store it in a sealable bag between uses when you’re out and about so that you’re containing any particles
