Set the alarm for a special Maitland Regional Art Gallery event on Saturday 15 January and see Skywhale and Skywhalepapa.
Experience the magic of Skywhale and Skywhalepapa, two hot air balloon sculptures by Patricia Piccinini, as they come to life before sunrise in Maitland.
For those who remember, Skywhale previously visited Newcastle back in 2014 at Civic Park but due to winds was unable to be fully inflated.
This event promises to be an unforgettable experience. Join the pre-dawn festivities at this once in a lifetime community event. Bring your blanket & thermos to Maitland’s No.1 Sportsground or enjoy a coffee and snack from onsite vendors.
Relax and watch as the 30-metre sculptures slowly rise from the ground and, if weather permits, take off across the skies of Maitland. It takes approximately 90 minutes for the sculptures to gradually inflate, reaching their full height around sunrise.
This is a free event and open to the community, but bookings are essential. Book your free tickets via the MRAG website.
Bring a torch, picnic rug and get close the action on the grass or take a seat in the grandstand. Camp/folding chairs are not permitted.
Gates open at 4.30am. Please feel free to join the event at any time after gates open.
The sculptures gradually inflate over 90 minutes, reaching their full height and taking off (weather permitting) at sunrise. The event will conclude at 7am.
Maitland No 1 Sportsground is wheelchair accessible.
