There’s loads of fun at Newcastle Region Library during the April school holidays

Activities include:

  • Story Stomp Storytime – Newcastle libraries are going green these holidays, with plenty of nature-based stories and outdoor activities for children ages 3-7.

Lake Macquarie City Library

Lake Macquarie City Library has organised loads of fun school holiday activities in their libraries.

  • Art & craft sessions creating llama suncatchers at Cardiff, Edgeworth
  • Storytime Building Stories: Join a special storytime about buildings and construction.
  • Gardening for kids: learn how to plant veggies and start your own native garden.
  • Workshops for kids including cyanotypes, book poetry and 3D splat drawing.
  • Book Poetry – Discover how simple it is to create poetry using pages from old books. Then turn your poetry into a work of art by adding illustrations.
  • Junkyard Beats Recycled Music Workshop invites children and adults to band together to create their own Junkyard Orchestra. There’s also the Industrial Landscapes exhibition at SEEN@Swansea.  See history up close and celebrate the changing industrial landscape of Lake Macquarie through historic photographs, including images of Newcastle’s port and BHP by renowned photographers Charles Collin.

Maitland City Library

Maitland City Library has a variety of fun workshops revolving around the theme “Construction Zone”. Be challenged with our construction and design activities these school holidays.

Activities include:

  • LEGO Construction Plus – Bring the whole family and join in the fun to solve the Lego challenges. Roll the dice and test your imagination, creativity and building skills
  • Cool Constructions: Kids can try solving engineering challenges just using craft sticks, clothes pegs and glue.
  • Lantern Making Workshop – Make and decorate a lantern in preparation for the Maitland Riverlights Multicultural Festival
  • Design and Build a Modern Town – Team up with other budding builders to design and build roads, parks and buildings to create the ideal place to live.

Newcastle Art Gallery

Featured exhibitions: KILGOUR PRIZE 2019 & ROBERT DICKERSON

The Newcastle Art Gallery has workshops for 5 to 12 year olds inspired by the current exhibitions.

School holiday activities include:

  • Drawing Faces workshop – Taking inspiration from KILGOUR PRIZE 2019, children will explore how feelings are expressed on faces through a guided tour of the exhibition. Using pencil, charcoal and pastels children will discover tricks and techniques for drawing faces with different emotions. 
  • Portrait Painting – Responding to the exhibition ROBERT DICKERSON: Off the Canvas, children will explore the fundamentals of figurative painting. This workshop guides kids through the process of determining their subject and setting. Children will then sketch out their subject before painting their image on a canvas.
  • Art Cart every Saturday and Sunday morning. Engages children with the exhibitions on display through discussion and art making. Led by Gallery educators, every weekend we interact with a different work of art on display.

Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery

Lake Macquarie Art Gallery is still closed temporarily for renovation. However, they are presenting Big Draw. Bring your imagination to life at the Big Draw with giant chalk boards. This event is a fun way for kids to enjoy the benefits of being creative while being inspired by the outdoors. Big Draw on the Foreshore is the world’s biggest celebration of drawing at Warner Bay foreshore on Tuesday 8, Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 October from 10am to 2pm. Free but bookings essential.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery

Enjoy art at MRAG during the holidays.

  • Crack the code in one of the self-directed Code Breaker activities! Visit the front desk and ask for Code Breaker 1 & 2,Colour Code Breaker or Search for the Golden Poo

Wander through MRAG and see the new exhibition. Stories from Wonnarua Country is a series of artworks made by students from seven local schools who have been exploring what it means to be living on Wonnarua Country today. The artists have been led by their student colleagues who are the leaders of  their school -based Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group.

There’s also Free Art Sundays to enjoy. Every Sunday families are invited to drop into the art gallery for free art activities inspired by the exhibitions on display. Activities are designed for kids of all ages, and as a family you can all join in and get creative. Each activity takes around half an hour to complete.

Spy Story Newcastle Museum

Drop by the Newcastle Museum this holiday to join in the fun activities.

Check out the latest exhibition SPY: Espionage in Australia. Become a top-secret agent and solve the mysteries at this family friendly exhibition. Explore special spy equipment and test your skills at codebreaking and reading invisible ink. This free family-friendly exhibition runs from until Sunday 13 October. The exhibition features free SPY MISSION and SPY STORY adventure trails. Kids can find clues, read the stories and discover what it takes to be a spy.   • Museum Mysteries: Code Breaker Workshop – Crack codes and ciphers and solve the mysteries in this 1.5-hour code breaking workshop. Test your skills and learn different ways to detect patterns, create secret codes and uncover clues throughout the Museum.
  • Fire & Ice Science Shows on Tuesday 1 & 3 October and Thursday 3 & 10 October at 11:15am, 12:15pm and 1:15pm. Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley

Put on a show these school holidays. At Rhubarb Jam Productions, they offer vacation care of a slightly different flavour…. Their workshops are designed to help your children connect with others, develop their creativity and skyrocket their confidence. All through a collaborative process combining singing, dancing, acting & sets and prop making to put on a unique performance.

Children aged 5-12 years are invited to create a themed production at Kotara South Public School from 30 September to 4 October. Their workshop program includes drama, dance, singing and sets and prop making. Finite Gallery

No matter what the weather, the kids can have fun at Finite Gallery, Caves Beach! Enjoy a range of fun two hour art workshops in the air-conditioned comfort of the gallery. Workshops allow the kids to learn new skills and take home their own creations. Sessions include clay, painting, drawing, printing, weaving and more. Paint and Sip Studios are running their ever popular school holiday painting classes for kids. These popular Paint and Create Classes are designed to build capacity, confidence and creativity in a fun, nurturing & relaxed environment. Each child will be encouraged to develop a passion for their work and an understanding of the fundamentals of painting with acrylic.

At the end of the session, parents are invited to arrive and view an exhibition of the masterpieces and Children get to take home their work.

Here’s some school holidays activities at Blackbutt Reserve.

  • Aussie Animal Painting – Come along and paint your favourite animal in the Wildlife Arena and receive a free stamp. All ages, tickets are $3 per person, available at the kiosk on the day. Monday to Friday in school holidays, except public holidays, at 1pm .
  • Reptile Show – Get to know Blackbutt’s cold-blooded residents with a reptile show in the Wildlife Arena. Tickets are $3 per person available at the Kiosk on the day. Open every day during the school holidays 10am – 5pm. Reptile Show held at 11am daily.

Hunter Wetlands Centre

Get outdoors and visit the Hunter Wetlands Centre in Sandgate. There’s plenty of tracks to go walking, a discovery trail, dipnetting and a super fun playground. Bring your bike and ride around the site. Hire a canoe and view the site from the water.

Hunter Wetlands Centre Teddy Bear Picnic

Enjoy a Teddy Bears’ Picnic at the Wetlands on Tuesday 1 October and Friday 11 October. Bring your Teddy, a blanket and a picnic and join in the fun. There will be a Teddy Bear display, craft, games, music, storytime and a parade of bears.  Teddies are encouraged  to explore the Wetlands and take selfies (or pose for photos) at various locations. Their photos can then be loaded onto our big screen for display in the Visitor Centre. Special Teddy Bear activities will run from 9.30am to 1pm. Dip-netting, playground and walks can be enjoyed till 3.45pm. General entry $8  Children 3 -5 years $5  Teddies and children under 3 Free. Closed in shoes and insect repellent recommended.

National Parks & Wildlife

Enjoy Biodiversity Day at Blue Gum Hills Regional Park in Minmi from 10am to 2pm on Thursday 3 October. Bring the kids along to interact with live native animals and visit stalls run by NSW National Parks, Saving our Species, Local Lands Services, Hunter Water, and many more. Activities include nature activities for kids, Aboriginal dance group performance, guided nature and culture walks, free native plant giveaway as well as a free sausage sizzle.

OUTDOOR FUN

Bounce Around on Inflatables

Inflatables on the Green at Club Charlestown is back for the Spring school holidays from Monday 30 September to Sunday 6 October from 10am – 2pm. Entry is $5 per child per day or $15 per child to come for unlimited entry over the duration of the event.

There’s also a daily sausage sizzle for an easy lunch option or the bistro is open for lunch. Kids Eat Free is available every Monday – when one adult purchases a main meal, up to two children may eat free. Advance bookings are not required – you can just turn up and purchase day passes for a fun family day out. There’s a toddler zone with two inflatables for under 5s plus three larger inflatables for the older kids up to 12 years of age.

Visit the beach or pool

If the weather’s warm, head to the beaches or pools. Lifeguard patrols start at Newcastle Beach, Stockton Beach, Dixon Park Beach and Merewether Ocean Baths on Saturday 28 September 2019. (Newcastle Ocean Baths, Nobbys Beach, Bar Beach and Merewether Beach are patrolled all year round. For patrol times and baths cleaning schedules visit Newcastle City Council website. Lake Macquarie City Council lifeguards patrol Blacksmiths, Catherine Hill Bay, Caves Beach and Redhead beaches annually from the September/October school holidays through to April.

Beresfield Swimming Centre opens for the season on 28 September 2019. Mayfield, Wallsend and Stockton swimming centres operated by Blue Fit open on Monday 30 September 2019. Lambton Swimming Centre is open now. In Lake Macquarie, Morisset Swim Centre, Speers Point Swim Centre and Swansea Swim Centre will reopen for the summer. Charlestown Swim Centre and West Wallsend are open year round.

There’s lots of fun activities at Lake Mac Swimming Centres over the school holidays including free learn to swim lessons for beginners five years and under, Swim Intensives, CPR Awareness Sessions, Make a Splash Story Time with The Rover. There’s also Laser Warriors Outdoor Laser Tag at Lake Mac Swim Centres this school holidays at Charlestown, Swansea, West Wallsend and Speers Point Swim Centres. Young Peoples Theatre, a not-for-profit youth theatre company in Newcastle is presenting Thoroughly Modern Millie JR. during the school holidays. Filled with fun flappers, dashing leading men and a villainess audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie JR. is a clever adaptation of the six-time-Tony-Award-winning Best Musical and the Academy Award-winning film. Thoroughly Modern Millie JR., is the high-spirited musical romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston! The famously revolting wit of Roald Dahl is now an exciting musical production for all ages, Jack and the Beanstalk! Atwea College is proud to present a youth cast in this hilarious family production during the October School holidays from October 3 to 5. National Young Writers’ Festival

As part of the National Young Writers’ Festival, there will be a day of free panels and workshops for high school and university students at Newcastle Library on Saturday 30 September. All of the sessions in the Younger Young Writers’ Program focus on some element of writing such as writing short stories, writing non-fiction or writing a novel. Mattara Festival

Details: Enjoy family entertainment at the Mattara Festival in Wallsend during the school holidays.The festival runs from October 5 to 17. HMRI Open Day 2019

Come along and discover the exciting world of health, science and medical research at the Hunter Medical Research Institute’s 2019 Open Day on Friday 11 October. There will be lots of fun and engaging things for kids and teenagers to do at the HMRI Open Day including Kids Science Sessions and activities, Science Meets Fiction talk,  and laboratory tours. This year, families can journey through the amazing Brain Exhibit, explore the weird and wonderful world of Wounds & Warts and complete fun science challenges. Riverlights Multicultural Festival

Celebrate multiculturalism at the Riverlights Festival in Maitland on Saturday 12 October from 3pm to 9pm. Riverlights is a diverse and colourful celebration of culture through interactive stalls, dance, food, music and arts. This free event really shines at night, with the popular festival parade and magical lantern flotilla featured on the Hunter River, an unforgettable experience.

SportsFest

Come and try a new sport at SportsFest on Sunday 13 October from 10am to 2pm at Speers Point Park. SportFest is an all-ages family friendly event hosted by the Hunter Academy of Sport. Fun and engaging simulators, batting cages and sports challenges will be dotted along the Sportsgrounds giving kids young and young-at-heart the opportunity to have a try at a new sport or test their skills and speed on a sport they already love. Fitness classes, health and wellness booths, and healthy food stalls will all be a part of the day.

Charlestown Square is presenting Charliechella, the Ultimate Kids Festival from Saturday 28 September to Thursday 4 October. It’s an all star line-up of performances and activities at Charliechella!
