Newy with Kids chats with kids book author Jennifer Sharp. She’s one of the many local authors and illustrators which call Newcastle & Hunter region home.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Fun, loving, creative.

How did you become a children’s book author?

As an educator for 20 years and now a grandmother, ideas are everywhere. When I was teaching, mostly lower school for 12 years, I always enjoyed watching the children interact with stories. Then one day I thought, I should write my own. So, I did! It was a long time before I was brave enough for publication though.

What inspires you? How do you capture your ideas?

My ideas are inspired and captured through being around children. I love interacting with them whether we are playing outside or giggling with them at story time. I also find much inspiration from my animals taking photos of them and capturing those funny moments.

What are you working on right now?

I’m working on a picture book story with a working title called, Nana’s Rainbow. It’s a story about a grandmother and her grandchildren using different colours to build a rainbow of love.

When can we expect your next book to be available?

I’m Just Little will be released 6 October 2018 and Imagine February 2019. Hopefully, Nana’s Rainbow will be due for release for Mother’s Day.

Other than your books, what are your favourite books or authors to read to your kids?

Oh gosh, this is very difficult. There are so many wonderful authors and illustrators out there with many outstanding ones based in Newy.

Any other interesting things that your fans should know about you?

Interesting? Hmm…I adore all my fur balls – 2 dogs and 2 cats. They keep me very amused and are wonderful play mates. I love coffee and chocolate and I think sunflowers are the most beautiful flower in the world. Why? Because each day, no matter what, they raise their faces to the sun and smile! I also love to swim in the ocean, building sandcastles then letting the waves wash them away. I also love to walk deep in nature and breath in all the air from the trees. I give them a hug sometimes too! I love to go to libraries and smell the pages of every book I touch. There is something a little bit magical about doing that.

Where is your favourite spot in Newcastle and the Hunter to go with your family?

There are so many wonderful places in Newy. Apart from the beach, we love Blackbutt; such a wonderful place for families and a fantastic way to ignite all the senses. The Hunter Valley Gardens are awesome too.
