10 Things to Do This Winter With Your Family in Newcastle & The Hunter
Winter is here (brrrrrrr!) and to celebrate here’s a few ideas to enjoy the season with your family.
Winter Live Unplugged
Enjoy music, art, food and drinks in Darby Street on Saturday 23 June from 2pm to 8pm. Winter Live-Unplugged will be held in a number of venues along Darby Street, and will not just be a music event it will also be a “Taste of Darby Street”, with food, fashion, brewers, baristas, jewelers, hair and beauty and travel retailers participating.
The Big Freeze
The Big Freeze Newcastle is a fundraising event to raise funds to find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease, along with building awareness and having fun at the same time. The event runs on June 23, 2018 from 3pm. The Big Freeze Newcastle will start with a family fun day at Newcastle’s Number 1 Sports Ground. There’ll be an AFL game, a parade of runners completing a relay race, and other fun activities. Of course, the main event will be the giant slide leading straight into a pool of ice water, where several local personalities will be dunked for their commitment to freeze MND!
Snow Time in the Garden at Hunter Valley Gardens
Enjoy all things winter without having to travel to the snow at Snow Time in the Garden at Hunter Valley Gardens. Your family can enjoy ice skating, playing in the snow, building snowmen, ice tobogganing and the opportunity to see ice sculpting. This three week event runs from Saturday 30 June to Sunday 22 July 2018.
Enjoy Winter Movie Nights
Enjoy some bonding time with the family! Make some popcorn and cozy up in front of the TV and watch some movies together. Or head to the movies to see some new releases.
Go see Disney on Ice
One of my favourite winter shows, Disney on Ice is an entertaining outing for the whole family featuring your favourite Disney characters. This year Disney On Ice presents 100 Years of Magic at Newcastle Entertainment Centre from Friday July 13 to Sunday 15 July! Celebrate the legacy of Disney in this ice skating spectacular as Mouse-ter of Ceremonies Mickey Mouse leads a parade of characters including Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and an ensemble of Disney Princesses. Be dazzled by the magic of Disney’s Frozen with Anna, Elsa and the hilarious Olaf. Sing-a-long to over 30 of your favourite Disney songs including “Let It Go!,” “You’ve Got A Friend in Me,” and “Hakuna Matata.” Exciting moments from Disney Pixar’s Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Disney’s The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and more will leave the whole family with memories that will last a lifetime.
Try ice skating
Embrace winter sports and try iceskating at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium in Warners Bay. Or if you prefer to watch others skate, take your family to watch a Newcastle Northstars ice hockey game.
Visit your local library or bookstore
With these colder night, curl up with a good book under a blanket and stay warm. If you don’t want to leave the home, take advantage of e-books offered by Newcastle City Library and Lake Macquarie City Library.
Go whale watching
May to August is whale watching season and Newcastle and Port Stephens are on the whale migration route. It’s estimated that 10,000 humpback whales pass this region heading north between May and August. Hang out at Nobbys Headland, Newcastle Beach, Merewether, Redhead or Dudley Beach and see if you can spot passing whales or join a whale watching cruise to get up close. We went whale watching in Port Stephens a couple of years ago and experienced humpback whales breaching close to our catamaran.
Attend the Wallsend Winter Fair
The Wallsend Winter Fair is on Sunday 12 August 2018. It’s a free family friendly day in the middle of Wallsend and features a grand carnival, amusement rides, live entertainment, market stalls and a lot of fun.
Visit Blackbutt Reserve
Take a trip out to Blackbutt Reserve and see the animals. Unlike in the height of summer, animals should be more active and easier to spot.
